Jim, Not to be picky, but it's either an 850 or an 860. You can't make an 860 act like an 850 by by changing the clutch linkage positions. What you described will alter the free travel in the 860's clutch linkage, and in effect will disable the second stage (PTO clutch). This will leave it in a condition where the second stage can not be disengaged... so there's no PTO clutch. The 860 will have a hollow input shaft in it's transmission where (I think) the PTO is the outer shaft and the main shaft is inside. The PTO has a counter gear that drops the drive to the tranny counter shaft and sends the power flow out to the PTO shift lever. The 850 will only have the one input shaft, and the drive for the PTO is taken directly off the transmission. There's a fair difference between the two, component wise, even though they're both 5 speeds. You are correct about the linkage though. It's just that if it's adjusted like that, there is no PTO clutch. The other possibility is that the second stage of the clutch is stuck.... again there will be no PTO clutch, and the PTO will grind when being shifted into gear. Rod
