I have a Ford 851D, and steering fluid is leaking just below the steering wheel around the top of the shaft. The parts catalog just shows a dust seal (8N-3570) at the top but none others that I can see. Also the dust seal is inset into the steering column, how do you get it out?

Yep, Richard is probably correct. The steering control valve is leaking. You have to take the whole column out to repair. Not too hard to do and the parts are available (mostly) from FNH.

If you want to know what it looks like inside the column, here's some pics of mine. Is is NOT the same as yours, but very similar. It is from a HD Industrial and only has 1 rod to the front end. Follow the link for all the pictures.

I"m guessing it has PS and the seal above the control valve is the culprit. What manual are you using?

I see the seal now. I was looking at the diagram for standard steering. Any tips before removing this thing?

Thanks

Here"s a tip, depending how far you go... Mark everything especially the lines and don"t loose any parts, they are hard to replace. Got a camera? Take pics of disassembly helps me. Richard

Tips?

Not too many are needed, it's pretty standard, About the only thing is to mark the pieces of the column so that they all go together lined up. And take pictures of the parts that come out. Some of them have to go in the EXACT way they came out. Orientation is important! Then diagram the hoses to make hookup easier.

I would also drain and flush the pump and drain the cylinders. Use new 134 class fluid and buy a new filter for in the pump.

Should go pretty smooth.
