Have a 56 Ford 860. The tractor was sounding fine then suddenly the tranny started to make a whamp whamp noise that is in frequency with the speed of the engine. The noise stops when the clutch is depressed. If you move the tractor it will move but make the noise while moving, when you let up of the clutch while moving that tractor will stop quickly like something is holding the tractor back. Got any ideas. Also seems that the tranny is full of hydralic oil, isn't it supposed to have gear oil in it?

Thanks guys, I also think it's likely a bearing that's gone bad. I was already planning on tearing the whole tractor down anyway.

Does the clutch pedal feel sticky? Do you have to sometimes put your toe under to pop the pedal up? If so then it's a good possibility the clutch fork is bent and not releasing properly.

It sounds like a bearing has gone bad in the transmission. Perhaps you can remove the shifter and the cover plate and find the bad bearing inside. It sounds like you're looking at a complete teardown. It's not that difficult- I did my 861 a couple of years ago.

Ford recommends the use of 134D hydraulic oil in the trans, hydraulics and rear axle.

Originally the transmission and rear end had gear oil in them. It is still acceptable and I prefer it in the rear axle. However, new wisdom says use hydraulic oil throughout.
