860 ignition switch??

I gave my 860 a good workout this weekend pulling stumps and moving dirt. Each time I shut the engine off it started hard, and eventually didn't start at all. I have heard Dell tell of the "weak sister" ignition switches he has experienced, so I did a little testing. I had only 4 volts at the coil. (6 volt positive ground system) I removed the switch and checked continuity and found that my cheapy analog tester showed resistance, that is, the needle went up only half way on the scale (I zeroed out the tester before I tested the switch, that is to say, I set the dial to go all the way over when I touched the two leads together). So here's the question: Is there supposed to be some resistance in the switch to cut down the voltage at the coil? In any event, I got a new toggle switch rated for 6 volts and 50 amps and replaced the key switch. The tractor started fine thereafter. Incidentally, the engine never once stopped running, once it was running. This confused me a bit since Dell's diagnosis of "bad switch" says it will stop running after running about 15 minutes. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Ken:

It sounds like you have experienced the all too common and hard to diagnose vintage Ford ignition switch problem. Your diagnosis was well done.

Any resistance in the closed ignition switch should be measured in miliohms. There is no designed-in resistance in the switch.

Ignition switches for the side munt 6v units on a 6v system don't need any extra resistance. The 6v coil side mount coil is fine on a 6v battery. Sounds like your switch was just starting to go. Some switches ar ok at start, then heat up and stall the tractor.. others are just bad and make for hard starts due to resistance.. etc.

Sounds like you solved your problem.
