After running my 860 for a while and cutting off the ignition it will "diesel" for a short time before it stops. Anyone tell me what causes this?

Thanks for all the help guys. Cleaned the dist. this afternoon and am going to check the timing next. Dist was a little dirty but haven't ran it since then because of battery trouble. Had to pull out battery and clean it up.

John, the others have given you good advice. Make sure that it has the right heat range plugs, verify the timing and operation of the centrifugal advance mechanism, and set the idle as low as possible. If need be, set the idle so as to completely close the throttle and shut it off by closing the throttle control.

John, we did a 172" a few years ago for a 640 and cut the block, cut the head, and it did the same thing using 437 plugs. Also, we installed a NOS distributor. Bought some premium gas, problem solved....Kelly.

I have gone thru a lot of the same before because of the distributor not being up to par. If you remove the point plate and look there are "fly weights", they need to be clean and free to change the timing at different rpms. It is frugal to try to set your carb or timing if these are not working right. HTH, Richard

The tractor does it only when hot, but starts right back up with no problem. Engine was rebuilt 2 years ago and really don't have that many hours on it since the rebuild. I am running Autolite 216 plugs and regular unlead gas. Carb does seem to be a little rich but I have not been able to sucessfully adjust it. Thanks for all the help. It always starts very quick cold or hot without the choke.

Try letting the engine idle before turning the ignition off. This is caused by carbon or hot spark plugs tips. Two neighbors lawn mowers always give off a loud bang because they shut off the ignition at full engine speed. My old truck will diesel once in a while. The only way ignition could cause the problem would be retarded spark. Once the ignition is switched off you cant blame caps ,points etc.Naa has a timing mark on the flywheel.Line it up and see if rotor is pointing at # 1.I use a timing light.Static check will work fine.H14y plugs could cause dieseling if they were in the engine. These plugs have a long tip and resist fouling better than h12 plugs.

Two questions: 1. Does it do this only when the engine is hot and you shut it off? 2. When you try to restart it when the engine is hot does it seem like the battery is low, like the starter is having trouble turning the engine over? If the answer to both questions is "yes", my guess: carbon buildup in the cylinder head. The carbon deposits get hot when the engine gets really warmed up. When you cut the ignition, the hot deposits continue to ignite the fuel causing the engine to run on for a while. When you try to restart right away, the hot deposits ignite the fuel prematurely so your starter is actually working against the explosion in the cylinders, acting for all the world like the battery is weak. Next time this happens, let us know.

There is a couple of things it can be. Carb running to lean, Engine is out of time,
