I know a guy who has an old erickson skid steer. He said the motor is bad and needs an overhaul. I think it runs but not very well. What motor did these things have? Where can I get parts? Will any other motor fit, like maybe the old 1600 that they put in Pinto and Mustang II? How unsafe are these old units that don't have any ROPS?

I've got an Ericson 4058. The motor is a Ford inline 4 cylinder, 1.6L. Similar to a Pinto engine - or so I have been told. It looks just like a CL40, except that mine has roll over/falling object protection. That could have been added later though. I am not sure what other differences there might be.

The starter acted up today, so I pulled it and cross referenced the numbers (the internt is great). Turns out that it's a starter from a '78-'80 Ford Fiesta.

I have an Erickson Husky Model LD4D-G Skid Steer with a Wisconsin Motors Model VH4D 4 cyl. 30 HP air-cooled motor. I think the skid steer was built in the 60's. Wisconsin Motors Sales Office is 800-932-2858. That is in Memphis, TN. I have also dealt with Wisconsin Motors Canada: www.wisconsinmotorscanada.ca, email: wmcinfo@rogers.com. If you are interested in the skid steer, this one is for sale with a trailer. Hope this info helps.

I knew a guy who claimed they used Model A Ford engines in the late 40's, but I doubt it. I'll bet it was a flathead Continental or an 8N industrial engine and he didn't know the difference. [this was on Erickson forklifts]

I really can't help you with the machine. Don't know squat about them. But the second question I can help with. In all the machines I've run, never have I had my carcass saved so many times as I have had by the Rops/Fops on the skid steer. I think I would be very leary of running a skid loader without some sort of falling object protective structure (FOPS). I've dropped bales, rocks, dirt, silage, gravel, wood, and who knows what else into that machine from bucket spillage amd mishaps. It's probably the single most important safety device you could have on a skid steer loader. Normally I'm quite complacent about ROPS on a tractor, but with the skid steer, you're right there, with nowhere to go, at the middle of the scene of the crime..... Dead.

The CL40 Fords made by Erickson that we sold were V4 ind Ford engines, water cooled. The engine was an option depending on the size of the loader.

I'm not positive, but I think they used Wisconsin's.
