My 56 850 binds on a left turn and not on the right. Tractor has aftermarket power steering/assist and is equipped with a Wagner loader. Is this problem likely the bearings in the steering box or something else?

Is the power steering one of my JPS units? in reply to JoeE, 03-09-2006 13:03:30
If so Joe, just give me a call...I want you to be happy with your steering. If it isn't one of my units, I will be glad to help you in anyway I can. My number is 620-357-6546.

Best Wishes,
Roland Jackson

Yes it is most likely the bearings in your steering box.
When you turn to the left the steering shaft is trying to unscrew out of the box. The bearing in the top of the box is what holds the shaft in place and forces the worm gear to move up and down the shaft.
This upper bearing sits high on the shaft and is above the oil level in the box making it wear and bind up first.
Expect to spend about $100. to replace all bearings and seals in the box. Gears and bushings would be extra.
