Have come across an 851L. I think the s/n is 14111. Can anybody help me figger out when it was made? The shifter on the five speed looks funny too. It's offset and moves up and down. What does that mean. Thanks for yer help. Abnormal

I have an 851 that I purchased last year. I was told that it was made in 55', so were they made earlier than 57'?

The 8 says it has a 172 cubic inch engine
The 5 says it has a 5 speed transmission (as described below) and a non-live pto
The 1 says it was built between late '57 and '62
The L says it uses propane fuel (or did when it left the factory)
The serial number 14111 says it was built in '58. Judging from the number I'd say January or February '58. I have a book at work that will tell me exactly which month. If you care, let me know and I'll look it up tomorrow.

All the numbers are stamped on the transmission housing. If the transmission has been swapped out at some time the numbers may not mean anything.

Abnormal,
That movement means it's Normal. The 5 speed shifter moves up and down and it moves fore and aft. All the way down and foreward=4th, aft=5th.
In the middle and foreward=1st, aft=2nd.
All the way up and foreward=3rd, aft=Rev.

Can't help with the exact year it was made but the 851's were made from 1957 to 1962.
