looking at buying a 1973 ford 4000 with ford loader, has bucket and spear, diesel, fresh paint, tires look good, is some wear in the loader pins. Not sure what it is worth. It is located in texas and asking price is 7000 which seems a little high to me. any feedback would be appreciated.

thanks for the info guys. I looked closer and it is a 776A loader for what its worth. It is east of Dallas. I am thinking i will see if they are willing to come down about $500 or so and if so then it is worth the 3.5 hour drive up to look at in person. Just hate to pull a trailer that far before i am pretty sure i want it. I figure having the spear is worth 500 or a little less since i would be buying one to put out bales with.... of course if we don't get some rain won't be anymore hay to feed.

Howdy Mattm,
Looking in the '05 Blue Book, here is what is shows:
2450 Average Used Trade In
3370 Average High Trade In
5900 Average Used Retail
6730 Average High Retail
Keep in mind, those figures are for a tractor only. The loader alone has a value, but how much I really don't know. I would guess being used no more than a grand.
The new paint has a value too, but not to me. I would rather buy something without and Earl Sheib overhaul so I know what I'm getting.
That being said, I personally would pass at that price. You might make an offer though that would satisfy both seller and buyer.
Also, you might see if you can find anyone in Texas near where the tractor is and ask if they would look at it for you and give an honest opinion as to it's condition. I'm in Texas, and if it was near me I would gladly look it over for you.

if it helps I just paid $4,000 for a 1972 4400 with a 735 loader. It had a couple oil leaks but overall it was in good condition. I suspect I paid on the low end of value though, bought it from a relative.

I just paid $5500 for a 1971 gas 4000 with a 6 foot woods mower . The tractor is in good condition and has low hours. The mower has a value of around $800 , so that put my tractor at about $4700

Sounds way high to me up in Missouri. Common price for one up this way is around $3500-5000.
