I'm attempting to install a Jackson Power steering unit on my 851 Ford. I have removed the steering wheel and the hold down bolts for the top part. I'm having difficulty getting the steering shaft out. Is there a keeper of some type or am I simply not applying enough force to remove the shaft? Thanks for the help.

Steps to remove the worm gear from the steering ge in reply to Roland Jackson, 12-17-2005 19:57:00
Hi, I haven't been able to get in touch with you, so thought I would write down some steps in removing the worm gear from the steering gear box...now that I am in the office and not on my lap top. I don't know if I will ever get use to typing on a lap top! Anyway, this is the way I remove the wormgear.

1) I jack up the tractor so the front wheels are off the floor.
2) Remove the steering wheel and the steering column.
3) The steering shaft and worm gear are only restricted from coming out by the sector gears. So if you can wiggle the steering shaft and turn the front wheels (sitting down in the tractor and pushing the drag rods with your feet) the worm gear will come out.

Looking forward to hearing how the installation went and how you like Power Steering on your tractor.

Best Wishes,
Roland Jackson
