1955 850: Holds well in all gears (including reverse) except 3rd. Doesn't seem to matter if it's under a load or coasting...will only hold in gear about 100 feet. I can keep it in gear with a little pressure on the shifter. Am planning winter projects for the tractor and would appreciate any input as to possible cause(s). First time into a tranny but have the shop manual. Thanks for any suggestions.

It could be a couple of things. One might be the detent which is located on the left side at the end of the radius arm there are 3 screws, third gear is the top screw, There is a spring and ball detent in there look to see if it is worn . Two is worst case, The teeth on the coupler and gear are worn, Then you would have to tear the transmission down. I would try a new detent first

Thanks. It'll be about a week before I get back to look and I'll check it then.

Bruce: did you get your problem fixed? I have an 850 that has the same problem and was curious how you fixed yours.
