I think the 850 came with 4 speed and 5 speed transmissions so 4 or 5 might be the trans type.

I didn't know there was a high clearance 800 series. I'd like to see a picture of it.

Now that you mention it neither have I. I did answer this post on the fly and did not really think about the answer. Vintage site has the 4 listed as a high clearance but now looking at the owners manual it does not even list this as a option available on this tractor.
Maybe Feron can add something to this as he saw the tractor. The vintage site may have it listed wrong. Would not be the first time I used false info provided by another site to make myself look like a a$$.

I don't think you made yourself look bad. You gave the same info I would have been able to give. I just find it interesting that Feron would find an 800 series with a -4 designation. Now that he says it looks like any other ordinary 850, I'd have to say that either the -4 doesn't mean what we've been led to believe or the guy stamping the numbers was not paying attention that day.

This tractor looks like a normal 800 nothing noticably different. Sorry I don't have pictures. That's why I couldn't figure out what the 4 stood for.

Could that number be 950-4 and be a transplanted transmission? The 8s & 9s looked a lot alike.

Well, John in la is correct that the -4 suffix is supposed to mean a hi clearance 4 wheel adjustable front tractor, but I thought that only got applied to 700/900 series tractors with a factory wide front. Maybe the s/n stamper got confused that day?

Another question: I also thought a -5 suffix was supposed to mean a factory wide front on a row crop tractor (700/900). The Vintage Ford Tractor Resource doesn't say that, but I think I read that on this forum once. If that's the case, what's the difference between a -4 tractor and a -5 tractor?
