I have an 851 tractor with a 172 Diesel that really smokes, especially when cold. It has a fresh in frame rebuild, rebuilt injector pump & injectors. I have to set the timing at 25 or so instead of 18 to make it somewhat less. I just don't know what to do. Is it possible that the injector cracking pressure is not correct? I don't know if, what seems to be excessive smoking when cold ,is normal for this unit or not. If anyone can enlighten me I would like to know. Thanks!

What color is the smoke? How long ago was the rebuild? Did you set the injector pop pressures or did someone else? Did you or the shop check the spray pattern on the injectors? Does the tractor crank easy and does it throttle up smoothly? Do you have the correct thermostat and is the engine getting up to normal temp? Lots of questions here, but answers would help to sort out the problem. I ran a 172 for over 20 years and the only time it smoked (a little black) was doing some heavy bush hogging or discing. On cold mornings it might smoke a little blue for about 10 or 15 minutes but once I started to put some load on her and got the temp up, it cleared up.

Okay- the engine doesn"t have 3 hours on the rebuild. I did not set the pop pressure on the injectors, I sent them to the diesel shop that I have used for 15 or so years. I remember that they called me and asked what the pop pressure should be, that they weren"t sure, on page 118 of the Ford manual it says nozzle opening pressure is 2750. I had the genuine Ford manual & I looked it up and told them.I actually have a pressure tester that will fire the injectors, and could possibly reset the pressure up or down if I had to.I"m not sure which way to go. It has a 180 or 190 thermostat. I don"t think that would make a difference in the first 5 minutes or so. It definitely is blue smoke. The tractor cranks well when using the glow plugs when the temp is below 60 or so. It throttles up and doesn"t miss. It doesn"t seem to have much blow by. When it gets warm, the smoking is acceptable. I must admit I own a repair shop in a small town for 30 years, and have rebuild plenty of all kinds of engines, tractors & vehicles & all sorts of stuff, but I would be totally ashamed to ask a customer to accept this type of situation as normal. I hope this will give some more info. Thanks again!

Since you said the engine only has a few hours on it, it sounds to me like the rings haven't seated. Maybe the liners weren't cross-hatched well enough?? You might try cracking open each injector line, to see if any of the cylinders seem weaker than the others. As far as the pop pressure, I think that's correct. I don't have my book handy but it seems we set up a 172 awhile back and the pressure was either 2700 or 2800 PSI. Slight variations in pressure wouldn't cause the blue smoke, but higher variations will actually affect combustion timing and power. If your engine is cranking up easy enough and is running well (plenty of power) I'd say you're OK on the injectors. For oil smoke, I'd be looking at rings or valve guides. Let us know what you find out. We'll be rebuiling three 172's after we get our shop built--probably in the spring. Still picking up the pieces from the hurricane.

Can't see it so don't know, but diesels smoke a whole lot until they warm up.

You do not have a problem. Set the timing according to the spec. sheet, then go to work. ~~HB~~ in NC
