After setting all summer, my 860 (6-volt) would not start. I have fuel to the cylinders, but no fire. I checked the spark on all of the plugs and found it to be weak looking; yellow/white in color. The battery cables are pretty old and I will be replacing them as well as the plugs and plug wires. I have cleaned all connections and they are clean/bright/tight. Am I on the right track here in getting started. The battery is pretty old too, 10 years or so. Any replies would be appreciated.

If the tractor has set all summer without running, the first thing I'd do is drain the old gas and replace it with fresh stuff. If your spark is weak as you describe, new points and condenser won't hurt and will be inexpensive. Try jumping with 12 volt direct to starter to relieve battery of supplying starter current as well as ignition current. Good Luck. DickTN

From reading your post I think it will crank over but will not start because of weak spark.
If so your battery/cables/relay/starter are fine. Cranking takes much more elec. than firing plugs.

I would give it a good tune up. Since all plugs fire the same I would look at things that are common to all plugs. While the plug or wires may be bad they would all have to be bad for it to have weak fire on all plugs. Now if one or two plugs would not fire I would look at the plugs and wires.

Things that are common to all cylinders are.....
points; condenser; cap; rotor; coil; small wires to and from coil. These are the things I would check first.

I'd say you're on the right track.

I'd look at points and condensor (at least, maybe cap, rotor and coil, too) as well...

If the battery will crank it over, with no problems, I might not worry too much about it, right now...

Ken..... ..as Ted said, I would convert to 12V. If you have to buy a batt. anyway, that will cut you cost. This will turn your engine faster (read faster starts) and make the tractor more versatile. You could jump a 6V with a 12V if you know how but, if you 12V truck needs a jump, the 6V tractor will not do it. Also, you will be able to run 12V sprayers, have brighter light, etc. with 12V system. Not that hard to do if you are not electrically challenged, if you are, you can get all the help here you need. The first tractor I converted was a Jubilee, got a lot of help on the 9N/2N/8N board. If you decide to convert, you will have to decide whether to use the 1 wire or 3 wire alt., so post by with any questions.

I agree with Steve. Also, if you're not dead set on keeping your tractor 100% original, I would convert to 12 volt. I believe you can do it for a couple hundred dollars, and possibly eliminate a lot of starting problems.
