I have been using my 860 the last few days to mow hay, working a few hours each day. It's hot weather, but my temperature gauge shows normal engine temp. At the end of mowing today (thanks be to God), the engine began to lose a little power. I increased RPMs, and then a few minutes later it just quit. I thought it was heat related, maybe vapor lock, so I waited 30 minutes and then tried it again. It started up, ran a few minutes, and then quit again. Same story a few hours later, except it ran 5 - 10 minutes before quiting. After it quit, it cranks and will start, but dies almost immediately *unless I keep it choked*. If it's choked, it will idle if I give it throttle, but it has no power. Nothing else seems suspicious (no leaks or smoke or noises).

I have plenty of gas in the tank, and gas in my glass sediment bowl, and the shutoff is open. I have a metal fuel line. I won't be able to look at it until tomorrow, but I am thinking that the carb bowl must not be filling up due to a blockage in the fuel line. I was going to start by removing the fuel line and blowing it out with air. If that didn't work, I guess I'll have to take the carb off and disassemble it.

I don't have any experience troubleshooting tractors. Does this seem like a good plan? Does anyone have any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Looks like there was a blockage in the passages in the cover of the sediment bowl: after I emptied the gas from the glass cup, it didn't refill. Mine screws into the gas tank, so I removed it and reverse blew compressed air through it. Now she's running fine. Thanks to all for your ideas -- you kept me from panicing :)

Michael,
Sounds like a fuel problem, but you need to be sure before you go off buying parts. Sometimes a bad gas cap will not vent properly, and cause a vacuum lock in the tank, creating this problem. To check, just remove the cap when the problem starts, and see if it goes away. Otherwise, get a can of ether, and as the engine starts to die, give it a shot, and see if that revives it. If it does, then you have a fuel problem. If it still quits, then you likely have an electrical problem. Then you have a better idea of where to start looking. On the fuel side, perhaps a plugged jet, or restriction in a line, etc. Another possibility is a leak on the intake manifold. On the electrical side... a bad coil or ignition switch would be possibilities. Hope this helps give you a start.... and post back.

Michael,

You have described the classic symptoms of vapor lock. Search this site for numerous discussions on this subject and it's cure.
