850: Now I got another problem!

Tractor is running fine tonight. Warmed it up good while raking hay and it did not miss or die. I have a new set of points in reserve. I'll look into getting a reserve condenser also.

Could very well be a fuel delivery problem.

However, my current problem is a snapped (in two) radius rod. It looks like it could be welded, but I'm no welding expert. It broke off fairly clean up front where the oval tube widens out to a wishbone. I took a picture, but my photo software won't work on this computer. I'll upload it at work.

If it can't be welded, does anyone have a spare radius rod from '53 and up laying around? I've got hay cut and I'm looking at borrowing a tractor if I can't get this fixed soon.

It's not supposed to look like this! Funny thing is I never heard it break. I just started noticing a lot of groaning and squeaking noises from the front of the tractor. My attention was mostly to the rear as I was raking hay in a confined space. When I looked forward to see what was making all the funny sounds, this is what I saw.

I got it welded by friend for $10. I can make it look pretty later. For now I'm just interested in getting back in the field.

Just for your information, that angle iron welded to the underside of the rod was there when I bought the tractor. Apparently the tractor had a loader on it at one time and I guess the previous owner made this modification to prevent bending the rods. I guess it worked since the rods are not bent.

You can't really see in from these photos, but this part shows the difference between the original red (inside of rod) and the later repaint with New Holland red/orange (outside of the rod).

Jim: Seems like you"re on the right track. Start diagnosing electircal for sudden shutdown. But if it starts to buck, jump, snort, wheeze, cough, sputter, then die after warming up, it could be a bad condensor, but more than likely a fuel delivery problem.

So, it"s time for a good tune up, and check for a ground from the coil wire into the distributor and make sure the insulator from the coil wire and all is good, replace the condensor, and regap and clean the points.

Then, after your spiffy new tune-up, start tracing your fuel delivery from the inside of the tank on down.

Put some gas treatment in the tank for any condensation problem if the tank is low etc. and time to check fuel flow to the screens and clean out the jets in your carb and readjust the idle screws.

Simple maintenance stuff. Just wish fixing women was simply a set of new points and a couple fuel screens. LOL!

Hi Jim,

I think a good welder can repair your radious rod so that one would never know it was welded. I have seen a few radious rods that were welded/repaired with out a problem.

I had a Ferguson two bottom turning plow that had the front plow frame welded where it had been broken in the middle. I used it for many years without a problem.

However, if you are a perfectionist (like I am) you may want to find a good used radious rod. HTH Rick H. GA.

If I was a perfectionist, my tractor would look a lot better than it does ;)

My master welder who works cheap (wife's uncle) is currently out of town. Any of his 3 sons could also do it, but they're always running 3 different directions. I'm sure I can corner at least one of them and get them to do it. If I can find a reasonably priced used one, I'll probably buy it, too, just for insurance.
