My pto shifter works but is stiff and hard to get the pto fully engaged. Any chance the problem is just in the shifter and not the rail or the splines? In the manual, It looks like the cover plate might come off easily.
Could I tilt the tractor up sideways to avoid draining the fluid? That would make it an easy inspection. Is there something important I should know about before removing the cover?

You can take the plate off the side with out draining fluid. Or at least that the way it was on my 861. The oil level will be right at the bottom of the hole and if some of the lower studs come out other than the nuts coming off the oil will drain a little from these holes.
With that said you will need to drain the fluid any way if the shifter is not the problem as the shaft and slide collor is down in the oil and you would have to jack onto its side to get oil to run over enough to see this shaft. Do not get your hopes up though because this is just a L shaped piece of metal going through the cover. Not much to bind there. The shifter hooks to a rod that has a ball and spring lock on it to keep it in gear. It then has a fork on the end of rod that goes to the slide collor. Since this all rides in hyd oil not much chance of it freezing. Most likely your PTO shaft is twisted or the bearing by slide collor is shot causing the gears to hang up.

Draining the fluid (and pouring it back in) is easy enough I wouldn't bother with trying to tilt the tractor up to one side. Besides, you've been meaning to change that oil for the last 3 years anyway, right? (just kidding).

I don't have any experience in removing that shifter cover plate. It sounds like maybe your pto shaft is twisted a little so the splines aren't straight anymore. That's my WAG.

thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and open it up. Sounds like a fix may be more involved than just taking off the cover and messing with the shifter. I wouldn't have thought of a twisted pto shaft but it makes sense now that I think of it. Maybe I'll save this one for after mowing season.
