850 popping out of gear

OK so I have had my tractor about a week now. Rebuilt the carb, adjusted timing, and did a whole bunch of tasks with the loader and box blade.

Sometimes it pops out of gear when I am pulling hard up a hill or going down a hill. Not big deal going up, but a little disconcerting when going down a hill. I hit the brakes quick, put it back in gear and off I go again. But would hate for it to get away from me.

So far I have noticed it in 3rd and 1st gears. Is this just par for the course on these things? Or is there an adjustment? Or is it a major deal to fix?

Scott

Scott,
You may not have as much of a problem as you might imagine. The 5 speed transmission has a tendency to jump out of 3rd and reverse, since these are across from each other at the top of the shift pattern, and get used more than the other gears. Often times it will jump out of gear because the gears do not fully engage. This is because the tapered, square head, set screw that holds the shift fork in position on the shift rail, has loosened and will not fully engage the gears.
If you catch it when the problem first begins, often times tightening the set screw will let the shift fork push the gear into the fully engaged position and eliminate the problem of jumping out of gear. While you have the top off the transmission, tighten the set screw on all 3 shift rails and be sure to replace the safety wires.
If this problem has been going on for a long time, my suggestion may not solve your problem. In that case, get ready to spend some money. However, the 5 speed transmission is a very good transmission and is worth putting back into shape.
Let us all know your outcome.

Scott, you might want to get into the tranny before it tears itself up.You might only have to replace the bearings.Mine was doing the same thing and it finally wiped 2nd gear. That was costly compared too a bearing replacement.

Yikes! Can you elaborate a bit? Replacing bearings in a transmission sounds like a pretty big job, but if there is really emminent disaster waiting to happen, I'd like to know more. I am generally an "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" person, but does popping out of gear indicate something serious is broken?

How big of a job are we talking here?

Thanks,
Scott

I believe it's a sign things are wearing loose inside your tranny. Some of the spacers or shims are no longer made by NH, however that's because it is cheaper for the local machine shop to make some for you.

The big part right now for you is labor.

If you wait until things get worse, what happens is the gears only ride on 1/2 of each other. It's much easier to chip one, or at the least they wear funny and in the future will not want to line up smoothly & you will have to replace them as well as the shims & other loose parts.

It's also a saftey issue. Coasting down a hill with a load behind is scarry. Riding your brakes - Ford brakes aren't the best to begin with, do you want to wear them out real soon too? What if a kid or a pet darts out in front of you as you're coasting down a hill....

It's not a _mojor_ job to do as I understand it, but a lot of parts need to come out of the tranny & a lot of judgements made on what is worn & what is still good. The sooner you do it, the more of your original parts will be able to be kept.

Scott,Try riding your brakes lightly when going down hill. This will keep it from jumping out of gear.

My 801 does that in first its a 4 speed and yes I know you have the 5, all I do is use 2nd or hold it in with my knee, either one works well.

Scott, The 5 speed has metal balls in it that hold it in gear. When the internal parts get worn the balls fall out. 1st and 3rd are the ones affected. I don't know a great deal about this. Just tellin what I know. Eric

Scott, 850 would make it a five speed and not uncommon for a well worn transmission to pop out of gear. Yes, it can be fixed but the parts are expensive. You can hold it in gear with one hand and drive with the other if you will feal safer than having it pop out at those inopportune times..... .AB-NY

Yeah, I have started keeping a hand on the shifter when going down hill. I can live with this work-around since it doesn't sound like an easy fix or simple adjustment. Thanks all for the info.
