My Ford 8670 lurches into 10th gear from 2nd. No obvious reason, and does it in forward or reverse, and doesn't matter what RPM I'm running. Very dangerous. Dealer/mechanic hasn't been able to fix the problem. Lady rancher needs advice.

Are you saying that it shifts by itself from 2nd into 10th suddenly? If so, are there fault codes? Write more particulars and I'll try to help.

Yes, it lurches into 10th without warning, and there are no error codes. There's no way to do that manually, so it's something going wrong with either the transmission itself, or the computer that runs the stick. Either way, the dealer has been unable to repair it.

Yet another reply. I received an email from the technician I mentioned last evening. He is aware of one other case like this on a tractor that belonged to a friend of his. He believes, and so do I, that it has to be the CCM (Chassis Control Module).

Does your dealer have a CCM on hand to use as a test module or will he/she rob one from a tractor on the lot? It isn't all that hard to exchange. It will be embedded with information from its host tractor if it's borrowed however, and will need to be programmed for your particular model and options. Some info like tractor serial number, etc. is not changeable out here in the field. The last time I priced a CCM it was around $1500.00 HTH

Then again it may not have. This transmission operates on three main clutches: Reverse, Low, and High. Since 10th is on the low end of the high clutch and 2nd is on the low end of the low clutch, is it possible that it's automatically jumping from the low to the high clutch? If so what's making it do this? You might pose this to your dealer. HTH

I don't know which of New Holland's famous "central business units" you are located in. Some of them can be very helpful in diagnosing these problems, others not so much so. Ask your dealer to pose your problem to one of them or to their computer forum, I believe it's called ASSIST (It is on the CaseIH side anyway and believe it is on NH), if they've not already done so.

Other than that, I'm with Gary, except that I believe anything is possible with a crossed up computer. Sorry not be of more help, but hope this helps a little. Let us know how it turns out.

I'll also send an e-mail to someone who might know and ask him to look at this thread.

I don't think you'll find the problem internally. Sounds like you could possibly have a leak on one of the MC spools.I know there is a printed board in the shifter, but not sure if that would do it.But the shifting from 2nd to 10th on its own doesn't sound like a CCM problem.

Maybe more info would help . . . the original transmission dumped at about 900 hours. The dealer replaced it with a new one, and that's when the problems started. They replaced the powershift gear mechanism, and rebooted the tractor's computer, but none of that helped. Basically, the dealer has refused, or been unable to fix the problem. It's a real mess. It shifts by itself even in reverse, and it's dangerous to hook anything up to it for fear of it flying backwards. It's happened already, and it wasn't good. Luckily no one got hurt, but it sure caused alot of excitement. I can't afford two tractors, and don't feel right putting this thing back on the market without it being fixed.

Hopefully you have an owners manual. If you've exhausted all possibilities with your dealer, go to page 0-6. There are company contacts listed there for your area with telephone numbers. Call them. I guarantee they'll rattle that dealers cage.

Joan,

It sure sounds like it's a dealer induced problem, which, even though he hates to admit it, he should be willing to fix. You might want to strongly suggest that he ask NH coperate for any assistance they can provide.

Were you to have to sue him for the damage to your tractor and the damage to your income from his store damaging your tractor to the point that it is unusable, it will certainly cost him a lot more than going out of his way to effect the proper repair. He may even want to lend you an identical replacement tractor while repairing yours. Good luck.

Mike
