1982 Ford 4610 Diesel Electrical Problem

Now it's my turn to ask for some advice. My Ford 4610 Diesel won't charge the battery. It had this problem when I bought it and I had the alternator checked and it had high resistance in the windings and was rebuilt. The solid state voltage regulator was inoperable so I replaced it. When I went to replace the regulator, I found that the wire harnes main connector was gone. The previous owner had apparently broken the battery during removal and spilled battery acid on the main connector and the voltage regulator connector, destroying them. He then proceed to "rewire" the circuits, unsuccessfully I might add. I attempted to rewire then but obviously I am not doing it right. I recently moved to Western Montana (From the Tacoma, WA area) and they have real winter here. My tractor is hard to start because the battery is hard to keep charged and the winter temps are cold. I looked into new wiring harnesses, but Ford/NH wants close to $600 for them. I think that's highway robbery. This is a farm tractor for God's sake, not the Space Shuttle! I'm checking with the local auto electric shops to see if they can help. I wonder if any of you guys know where I might find some aftermarket wiring harnesses or know of any custom shops that might make them. I'd appreciate some words of wisdom from you folks.

Jerry,

You might want to obtain a shop manual for your 4610, it should have a good schematic of your electrical system. Then go to your local auto parts store and buy several different colors of 16 ga. wire, 10' each ought to be enough wire for your tractor and have a ball rewiring. Just double check where each wire goes before and after you install it.

It might take a bit longer, but you'll probably save around $550. You may need a couple of different sizes of wire, the schematic should also give you the size of the wires.

There's a good chance that if NH carries the wiring harnass, they'll also be able to get you a shop manual. Get the manual and good luck.

Mike

Thanks Mike. I have the full set of Ford shop manuals. It looks like an electrical system designed by Lucas in England and even though the I have the diagrams, there are some parts that don't make sense. As I said NH wants close to $600for the harnesses the last time I checked. If I can't find a premaid set at a reasonable price I will rewire the whole shebang myself. thanks again.

If I where you I'd just go to the auto parts house and get a one wire alternator and fix it that way andend your night mare unless you are trying to restore it of course a delco one wire should run around $65 and all you needis to run a wire to the battery and all is fixed

Thanks for the suggestion, old. But I still have to straigten the wiring out. Your idea is a good one 'cuz it gets rid of the separate voltage regulator. Thanks again.
