I broke my brothers pto shaft on his 5000 select-o-matic tractor.I was bushhogging and sheared a pin,the tail piece of run down the hog & came un coupled an before I could get pto out of gear an clutched it had already hit the lifting arm.Can someone tell me if this is going to be a very difficult job to replace??I've got a parts schematic from dealer,he was very harsh when I questioned him in ref. to me doing the work!! It broke 1 1/2 inches from outside end. My cost is $150 for parts.

you have to remove the right side axle housing to replace the output shaft on a 5000.

drp,

You should be able to deduce from looking at the parts diagram about how difficult it is going to be to do the repair work, your NH dealer is naturally going to want the repair business to come into his store, he has his reason$, you might want to check with some independent repair shops in your area and get their input on the difficulity and cost of the repairs. You know your skill level and that should guide you with your decision as to farm the job out or do it yourself, good luck.

Mike

HI, I just went through the same broken shaft problem.I have a '78 ford 5000,we took the cover above teh pto shaft off removed the top shaft,a nd reached down inside and removedteh kotter key and nut that away and slide teh shaft out. We got it back together. we are having a problem now that the pto lever seems not to be turning it on or off, like its not h ooked up inside for some reason, I was wondering if you could tell me why it won't now engage or disengage..... .Thanks..Don
