601 FUEL SHUTOFF VALVE

MY FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE(SCREWDRIVER TYPE)LEAKS all the time full open or closed. is there enough clearance to change this valve under the tank without removing hood and tank? any other hints?

Ed you probably got this figured out by now.FYI
Mine was leaking all of the time also. To remove it loosen the bolts at the rear of the tank, remove the bolts in the front of the tank. Prop the tank up with a screwdriver handle. this will allow you to remove the valve ( I removed the line from the carb first so it wouldn't get bent )
The next thing to think about is how the valve works. It is just like almost any valve, run the screw in and it has a seat that shuts off the fuel to the carb. However the only thing that keeps it from leaking out around the screw is an o-ring. You can repair it for about 39 cents.
File or grind the steel pin on the bottom flat, use a center punch to make a starter dent for the drill bit. Do not let the punch mark drift toward the screw end. You could probably drift as much as .030" inward without a problem.
Take a #21 drill and drill the pin out (just the pin don't drill past it or you will be getting into the shaft. Remove the needle and o-ring. Tap the hole with a 10-32 tap. I used new o-ring and a socket head cap screw to replace the pin. That is a allen bolt. The bolt may need to be shortened or add washers so it will allow the needle to travel to the seat without it binding.

Ed, I checked this morning, I agree the tough nut will be getting the fuel line disconnected. After that it should not be difficult to remove the valve from the tank. As George said you'll beable to remove the valve cover, if additional room is necessary. An articulated triple jointed crowfooted tubing wrench might make it reasonably easy to disconnect the fuel line.

I take it the rivet removal was for removal of the valve stem from the valve body, to replace the o-ring around the stem. This would facilate rebuilding the valve. The one I replaced was beyond rebuild. The filter was rotted away, the handle broken off and it leaked by the seat to flood the carburator.

If you do a rebuild you will need the o-ring George referenced for valve to tank seal. If you go with a new valve it should come with the o-ring.

I replaced my shutoff valve last week without removing any other parts. It was kinda tight quarters but it wasn't really a problem. The worst thing about it was loosening and then tightening the fuel line. I was able to get my hand up through the muffler side and this gave me alot more room to wrench.

I just fixed my shut-off valve on an 860. Used a wood chisel to loosed the rivet. Picked up a new O-ring at NAPA. I also tapped the hole 8-32 and used a set screw, that way I can replace the O-ring if every necessary again. So far seems to work fine. (Use some thread lock on set screw)

I too, would say no, but if you could worry that rivet outta there, it could be done I guess. I did mine when I changed the radiator, so I didn't have much further to go to take the tank off. And gettin that rivet out was no easy chore. Once out, I replaced the O-ring and used a pop rivet for a stop. I really want to put in an inline ball valve where it can be easily reached.

Ed, Right off the top of my head, I'ld say no. However the hood is off of the tractor. Having put a new valve in last spring, tomorrow I can use the old one and see how much clearance there is to work under the gas tank.

I'll post back in the morning with my results.

The valve can be replaced without removing the tank, but the problem is getting the fuel line fitting loose. If it's real tight, the bottom of the tank bends and the wrench hits the valve cover, not enough swinging room. Although it doesn't look like it, the valve cover is easy to get off for more work room. The valve is sealed to the tank with Ford o-ring #87020S92.

i've changed mine twice.first time took the tank off.secound time removed the valve cover.iff i have to do it again i'll remove the valve cover.good luck.
