Yellow Ford 621 Tractor

I have a 1960 Ford 621. It was originally delivered to the Kentucky Highway Department with a front-mounted broom. It was originally painted yellow (there is no red paint under the yellow).

The second owner removed the broom, added a three point hitch and pto, and painted the tractor red with gray sheet metal.

I plan to do a quick refurbish this spring, and later on do a full restoration. I am thinking it would be appropriate to paint it yellow, as it was originally. (It woon't be completely original, because I'm not going to remove the hitch or pto!) I'd be interested in answers to the following questions:

1. Did you ever see a new or restored 621 that was yellow?

2. If so, were there any markings on the side of the hood (is a 621 a Workmaster like a 641?)?

3. What do you think of the idea of painting the restored tractor yellow?

4. Any idea what shade of yellow Ford used around 1960? Unfaded places look like a slightly orange shade of bright glossy yellow (not light like lemon, or tan like Caterpillar).

I'll be taking pictures before and after the work, and hope to get them posted somewhere before to long.

Thanks in advance!

I to have a yellow Mod 621 I bought while living in Fairbanks. My tractor was used by the U.S. Air Force as a tug to move around aircraft. Mine has a cab, oversised rear fenders, front fenders and a large pentle hook mounted on the rear. One of my friends used to drive one for the Airforce identical to mine. Tire pressure is stenciled on each of the fenders and a brass plate inside shows shift pattern. I now am in Haines (with my tractor)

It's your tractor, paint it purple if you want! Sounds like you're wanting to do a bang up job and take it to shows, etc. Painting it yellow and then making a display card that explains that it was originally a Ky DOT tractor might be a nice touch....certainly stand out from the rest of the Fords at the show.

As for which shade of yellow, try matching to what you have or ask the KY DOT if they have any spare paint. I'm curious, is the inside of the air cleaner oil cup yellow or red? Most repaint jobs don't get picky enough to pull the air cleaner apart for painting.

The inside of the air cleaner cup is neither red nor yellow. It is silver metal, possibly galvanized. The outside first layer of paint is yellow.

I'll probably go with red, even if it isn't historically correct. After all, I have to live with it!

Ford actually produced a 601LCG (low center of gravity) that was the usual red but had yellow sheet metal.
