Looking for info on the Gold painted tractors, that Ford dealers received for demonstrators.
I've heard that most ( if not all ) were 871 Models.. How can you tell an original from a fake??

AS FOR THE GOLD DEMOS MOST ALL WERE 881-NOT 871-THE REASON BEING FORD WANTED THE MODEL WITH THE MOST OPTIONS AS A DEMO.BEWARE OF 871 GOLD TRACTORS.

I have a Gold Demonstrator. Mine is a 971 Deisel. What I have found out about these is that each dealer got one. They were gold to introduce the new Select-o-Speed transmission one of the first true Power shift transmissions. When the farmer went to buy it he had the option of leaving it gold or having the red and grey painted over the gold. The latter was the case with mine. When I repainted mine a couple of years ago (I repainted it Red and Grey, I knew very little at the time the story behind the gold paint and the tractor was in dire need of a paint job). The original gold was showing through in many parts of the tractor, including the transmission. I have found out that most of the original transmissions were replaced due to their poor performance, but I am not sure if that is the case on mine, the gold paint looked to be original when I did the repaint. Now if that is the case this transmission has stood up well, we ran a mounted cornpicker on it for many years pulling silage boxes full of ear corn. The serial number on mine is corroded away, due to the fact that the battery box sits right above it. I have heard there is another location to get serial number information, and if anyone knew this I would appreciate the info.

My fiance just found out he has a 971 gold demonstrator...he has had it about a year. It was his grandfathers and he had it since 1969 he was told it was a 901 select-o-speed....well my fiance decided to take it and have it rebuilt just for the fact it was his grandfathers. After many parts not working and other stuff just not fitting into place, the dealer decided to run the serial numbers and found out it is a 901 select-o-speed! But it's a 901, 971 gold demonstrator select-o-speed....we are very pleased and are continuing to rebuild it and restore it a close to original as possible. If any one has any advice or ideas on where to get all the parts and paint code please e-mail me....Thanks for listening to my story

Does yours have a number stamped in the right side of the trans? Same relative area as the real serial number only the opposite side.

Very interesting discussion. There is a guy at work who told me that his father bought a gold one - new! It is still running and has never been repainted or restored. The story that I have heard is that Ford dealers bought a gold one whether they wanted one or not - so this guy's father got a great deal on it one season later. I will try to get some photos of it.

This is from what I've heard and what I've read:
Dealers each got 1 gold SOS tractor. It could be any model they chose. So if that's true, any model that could have been equipped with the SOS tranny could also have conceivably been done in gold somewhere in the country. I would imagine a dealer would most likely order his gold tractor in a model that's most likely to appeal to the customer.

The only way to tell is to find a virgin. Once they have been repainted there is no way to tell. The serial numbers were stamped, ground off, and restamped. Any *71 or *81 SoS trans could be retamped with the 66,000 low serial number and passed as a real one. I believe there is also another serial number on the opposite side of the tranny, but this also can easily be stamped in a donor. To be a Real GOLD one, it has to have the original paint. I think 871, 881, 971, and 981 were all eligible to be GOLD.

They will have gold paint under any repaint job and the trannys will usually be red. The way I understand it, when the tranny was changed out the model number of tractor and ser. number was suspose to be stamped in the new replacement transmission. This info was given to me from a field engineer working for Ford at that time. There was an article publised in a book that I seen at a show, don't know the name of the book, but it had taken quotes from the Ford Typhoon Times and stated that the serial number started at 60,000 something. It also quoted that there was only 861 of these painted this way. I don't beleive this is true!

Bill, go over to the left to the "Photo Gallery" and search for "GOLD". My 881 is posted there. If you need more views, I can e-mail them to you. That tranny was gold, then red, then gold. The second gold must have been a quicky job as not much of it remains. The serial number is 69150 and the number on the right side is 12448. Also have photos coming of an 871 virgin GOLD found in salvage yard. Serial number there was 66884 with 10294 on the right side.
Find that book, I'd be very interested in the title and availability.
What are you doing for the front emblems? That's the only thing missing on the 881.

Rickwi, I have that book. The title is; FORD FARM TRACTORS. It was put together by Randy Leffingwell. I paid $29.95 for mine.On page 183 it has a picture of a 1959 Ford 871 Gold. Very nice book. Many very nice color photos. Dan Robertson

Thank you for the info, didn't know it was in the photo gallery, as for the emblem I haven't got that far yet. I have found some gold paint that was a very good match when I compared to a good sample underneath hood. I am more intrested in the decals at the present time. As for the book, it was a hard cover with a blue 2000 on it with sheep or livestock in background. There was a short article and a small picture of a gold 871 owned by a friend of mine on east coast. How about the correct decals?
