The local Massey dealer told me I should use TRANS-HYDRAULIC FLUID in my TEA 20. However I see posts on this site refering to 80 or 90w lube.

Should I start over with a different fluid or is the TRANS-HYDRAULIC suitable? as I understand it is a 30 weight with additives?

The quick responses to my previous post greatly apreciated!

Tanks Guys!

Don't get confused with the oil grade, when they say gear oil they do not mean that thick heavy stuff that smells of sulphur, it should be GL1-90W or multi-grade 15W/40 which are both as thick as normal engine oil which of course both of them are. Don't let them sell you that Trans-hydraulic fluid IT IS WRONG they are wrong, you can tell them to check up if you like, they always get it wrong and never learn from their mistakes. It hold 5 imp galls or 6 US galls no more no less, don't fill it too fast or the level will rise too high in the Transmission and may leak through the oil seal into the Clutch Housing, so take it easy.3 drain plugs on all grey Ferguson's, the one you miss is under the back axle...John

I'm sure the TEA20 would be the same oil capacity as the TO20. I have the manual here and for interest, capacities TEA20, TED20, and TEF20 are shown as follows:

Engine sump: 12 pints

Air Cleaner: 3/4 pint

Cooling System: 15 pints

Transmission Casing: 5 gallons

Fuel tank: 8 gallons (TED20 7 gal+1 gal; TEF20 10 gal)

Steering Box: 5 pints (That surprised me! I use oil and grease mixture.)

Front Hubs: 5/8 pints (I use a oil and grease mixture.)

Tires - Front: 26 psi

Tires - Rear: 12 psi

And Richard is correct - slow down with the oil at around 4.5 gallons, let the oil distribute and settle for awhile, then fill according to the dip stick or as John (UK) recommends, remove bottom bolt in the "port hole" plate until the oil just drips out.

Check that the two drip holes in the bottom of the clutch bell housing are not blocked - they should have split pins in them to keep them free and clear.

The thought just occurred to me from my aviation days, the above capacities would be Imperial - a language thing again!!! - a US gallon is 4 liters, whereas an Imperial gallon is 4.5 liters. Therefore, 5 Imperial gallons = 22.5 liters = approx 5.5 US gallons.
Some may remember the "Gimli Glider" - Air Canada's Boeing 767 which made a dead stick landing at Gimli in Canada. Another victim of Metric versus Imperial errors. (Pilots ordered fuel in kilograms, got the same number but in pounds - around half the fuel they required, resulting in a sudden and embarrassing silence at 30,000 feet!)

If "TRANS-HYDRAULIC FLUID" is hydraulic or auto transmission oil, your informant misinformed you.

Use only GL-1 90WT mineral oil or Multigrade engine oil in the Ferguson TEA20 transmission. Do not use heavy gear oil.

The TEA20 transmission holds 5 gallons.

i have also talked to a local dealer and he told me to use 80-90 W gear oil. Are you changing it or just adding to it. I am wonderinmg how often it should be changed and how much it takes

According to the shop manual all the TO's TE, and TEA's take 6 gal. if the cases are empty to start with. In the archives it says to put 5 gallon in then the last gallon should be added maybe a quart at a time with 5-10 minutes between to let the oil level out and check it is you go. As John (UK) says, with the tractor on level ground take one of the bottom inspection plate bolts out and the oil should just trickle out, if it runs out good you put to much in or the cavity was not empty of all the old oil. There are 3 drains on the TO and TE not positive about the TEA but I believe 3 also. Good luck. More questions? Every one here has more answers. Richard

George sorry about that my shop book doesnot include TEA so I would take Bob Aust info instead of mine as he has a TEA.
