I am replacing a outer seal on the rear axel of my 58 massey and I have an installation question. The one I got from my massey dealer is not like the old one. This new one has a little circular tensioning spring built into the rubber to help it seal. My question is which way does the spring side face? Should it face the brake backing plate or the tractor? It will fit both ways.

Thanks

GMB

What do you think, top pic or bottom toward the brake backing plate?

The bottom one is the spring side.

Look at the seal and then look at the sealing lip, that should face towards the oil it is trying to seal the tapered part should be away...John

The spring side goes toward the fluid you are trying to seal.
