I discovered and though I would share this with you folks, that the one wire alternator has a very slight drain on the battery when sitting idle.

I also discovered that, on the three wire alternator the same situation is present if the #2 wire is connected to the battery wire.

In both cases there is approx. 12K to 20K ohms between the terminal and ground. This is enough for a trickle discharge when the tractor is shut off.

I discovered this by trying to fix a problem of my battery being dead after sitting for a few weeks. I discovered this situation on my one wire, so I replaced it with a new three wire. I wired the #2 wire to the battery wire, before installing it I tested the resistance. It had the 20K ohms.

I wired the #2 wire to the ignition switch, now when I turn it off it really gets disconnected.

Just thought I would pass this along.

Your logic seems good. I can't argue with it.

However, the battery is also new. Also, when I disconnect the alternator, I have infinite resistance between the positive and ground (with the negative pole disconnected). The battery holds a charge for months with the negative pole disconnected.
Anyway I have solved my problem.

Does changing to a three wire setup mean a different alternator or just a different method of connecting it? Vehicular electrical systems are not my strong point. I also note I don't seem to have any fuses on this tractor anywhere despite the existence of working headlights, tail light, and worklight. That doesn't sound too good, even to a newbie.

Finally -- is the Brampton in your user name the Ontario, Canada Brampton? Just wondering as I'm in Oakville.

Yes the Brampton is, Brampton Ontario. however, I now live just outside of Markdale, Ont. I have not figured out how to change my user name.

I have to agree with JMOR; I have a one wire on my "48 TE 20 and battery has never gone dead.

That is normal & unless you have a bad battery, then your system must have some other drain. Why?
60amp-hour battery divided by 0.75milliampere=80,000hours.

80,000hrs divided by 24=3,333 days
3,333days divided by 365=9 years.

If a "few weeks" killed a good battery, then there would be millions of GM vehicles around the world with dead batteries all the time.

Modern computer controlled engines (everything built in recent times) drain more than 0.75ma when OFF just to prevent computer memory loss actually ~ 20ma, or 30 times the alternator, which reduces the 9 years to ONLY about 3 months. But then most modern vehicles also have batteries with a capacity greater than 60amp hours.
