Motor Oil Question

I'm a big fan of synthetic motor oil. Ive been using it for 14 years and have had good results. I drive allot of miles and all the vehicles I have owned have lasted longer than others with fewer miles had worn out. I use it in my car, truck and motorcycle but with the bike I'm careful to use the synthetic that DOES NOT have friction modifiers or say "energy conserving" on the bottle. Oil with "friction modifiers" will make the wet clutch in motorcycles slip (or so I'm told).

Question is, What do you run in your Ferguson and why?

A mineral engine oil cause rubber seals to swell. A syntethic engine oil does not cause rubber seals to swell.
So, on an old engine that is rather close to begin leaking oil from the seals, often start leaking once you change from mineral to syntethic engine oil. Simply because the lack of mineral oil cause the rubber seals to go back to normal and that is just what it takes to start a leak.

Diesel oil in a gosoline engine? Whats the advantage of that?

Thanks, Pete

Hey Pete... "Diesel Oil" is not really just for diesels... it is a "commercial" rated oil for severe engine service... I think the current highest rating is CJ-4, the "C" being for commercial... this oil has many (non-corrosive) anti-wear additives that reduce the wear in extreme pressure and high shear... These oils are part of the reason that current engines can go a million miles before overhaul... I use the commercial rated 15W40 in all of my crankcases and I will (at next change) put the same stuff into the Fergie transmission.. It has more of the extreme pressure (EP) ability than GL-1 without the potential corrosion that GL-5 has... And the stuff I am using is not the synthetic... just "dino" oil... Jim

I run either Shell Rotella or Mobil Delvac 15w40 in my gas powered TO35. But thats just a personal preference. The important thing is to change it frequently. Hey, while we're on this, do you guys normally change the oil filter with each oil change? I change my oil every 15-20 hours because I am obsessive about it in every engine I own. It seems to me that it would be ok to change the filter every other time since I change the oil more than twice as often as most people do.

I run 15W40 in my diesel F250, but I've been running "buck-o-bottle" generic 10W40 in my TO-20 since I rebuilt 'er in 2000. I've read quite a few posts both here & on the N forum from guys using 15W40 diesel oil. Next time I change engine oil, I'm probably switch'in to that. Modern motor oils are superior to the 50's vintage oil, no need for high-end oil. But, that's the nice thing about liv'in in a free country, free to run whatever oil you want in your Ferguson! If you got it, use it.

If it's non-detergent, stick with that until you have a chance to scrape out the oil pan and clean up inside the valve cover. Then go with multi-viscosity detergent or the synthetic you like. As always the main objective is a 'clean lubricant'.

It has whatever it had when I bought it, it looks clean so I'm not in a huge hurry to change it but I will switch over to Synthetic soon.

I run Chevron 10W40 in my Ferguson. It"s a multivis detergent oil and works well in our winters (-25F) and summers (90-100F) here in Western Montana.I get easy starts in the winterand my oil pressure stays at 27 psi from idle to max rpm, summer or winter.
