Well -- after what seems like endless travels, much agonizing, and a brief flirtation with those flashy Ford 8s, I have found my first tractor.

1951 TEA 20 Serial 180054.

To be delivered Saturday, complete with 12 volt conversion, blade on the back, pretty good tin, clattery motor, so-so tires and disabled shift start.

Thanks to all who have answered my initial dumb questions. Many more to follow!

Mark

Google "Ferguson TO20 shop manual" (or TE20, TEA20 etc).
This site

Haynes Australia

EBay Australia

EBay USA

EBay: Ferguson Shop Manual

You may find the gear shift start switch is OK - a previous owner may have preferred solenoid start. I can still see the original start switch on your tractor. They come apart to clean the contacts or a new one is around $50 I think.

Both the start switch and tool box are available from this site.

I have both the manufacturers original manual and the Australian produced Robinson's manual:

All a matter of personal choice, but for quick reference I prefer the Robinson's manual.
Robinson's is a division of the US Haynes publishers, so the manual is probably available from this site.

Thanks all -- for the replies and encouragement.
Bob -- I would certainly like to restore the shift start feature -- the thought that it will go in any gear at the moment gives me the willies. Also, getting a toolbox back on there would be a great idea.

Jeff -- I'd be honoured if you used a pic for your TE vs TEA photo. I'd love to know the differences myself and would be happy to provide more photos of the engine from whatever angle you want.

John -- many thanks for the valve info not to mention that front axle issue. Separating those bolts will be the first order of business. As for the oil pressure, it might be a tad low. I notice the gauge pegs for the first three or four minutes of running (easily 60 psi plus indicated) then settles down to 30-40 working and about 20 idling when fully warmed.

The seller is going to provide a photocopied owners manual as was delivered when the unit was new but is there a proper shop manual for this thing?

The "clattery motor" will probably be due to incorrect valve clearances, just check and adjust them, that should make a big difference. Keep the engine oil changed every 120 hours work and the oil filter every 240 hours. Use a good oil and the engine will last. The oil pressure should be between 40 - 60 psi when working. On the front axle someone has fitted the bolts in adjacent holes, they need moving so that they have at least one hole between or they can shear off.Congratulations on your new tractor...John

Very nice. Welcome over to the Fergy side. This is a good group and we look forward to you pictures and posts.

If you don't mind, I am going to steal that engine picture of yours and update my "how to tell a TE from a TEA" Photo.

Jeff

Motorv8n,

Looks like a keeper, my tea 20 is quite a bit rougher but she is work horse. Use her to plow, plant, haul manure' and bush hog with.

Have fun with her and enjoy the ride.

motorv8N. It has been converted to a solenoid activated starter. The original gear lever activated starter switch in the top of the bell housing has been disconnected. If you wanted to convert back to the way it was originally, new switches (if required) are around $50 and a tool box (around $25) bolts on where the solenoid is mounted.

Gramps. That has the correct breather tube for a TEA20. From the rocker cover into the intake manifold above the carby.

Nice tractor! Welcome to the club!

I agree nice looking tractor. I wish mine looked that good. I do have a question. Where is the breather tube off the valve cover? On mine it comes down the left side just in front of the distrubutor. Best Regards, Jack

Looks good to me. I've seen way worse!

You might want to think about getting rid of those car tires for three-rib tractor tires on the front if you're going to be doing any field work. Can be way down the list, of course.
