Looking for help with a TEA20

I bought a TEA20 and I am in need some help. I am trying to identify the year of the tractor but here is where I stand. The tag on the steering column is gone, the number that should be on the block is not there, and at some point someone changed the rear end so I can't use those numbers either. I pulled the head and measured the bore it is 80mm. The water pump is bolted to the block, not the head and the oil filter is slanted, not vertical, so I know it is an earlier tractor but not one of the first. The oil filter was changed at serial number 56339. So I am between 56339 and 172598 when it was changed to 85mm bore. I'm running out of ways to narrow down the year. I did notice while looking at parts on this site that the distributor tune up kit is split into two groups early and late. Does any one know when Lucas changed the style or what the cutoff for early is? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Bob,

I don't think anyone removed the engine number it looks as if it were never stamped. It doesn't have file marks like someone filed them off, it has machine marks from being machined, like original factory working of the engine. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow and post it here.

I checked the block behind the generator mount and found 12 1 9
the transmission housing numbers are harder to read and I can't make out the first two numbers just the last two 5 9 The head had this set of characters 16 12 U

Is it safe to assume that my tractor is a 1949 TEA20 or would it be a 1950?

Thank you everyone for all of your help.

Hi John,

I'll check the other areas for numbers, as for the number that should be stamped it is smooth with original machining marks still visible. The numbers weren't ground off to the best I can tell. I removed the oil fill neck to see if the area for the number had been re-machined but it is the same surface all the way across.
Thank you for the reply,

John (Ohio)

Look carefully around the Cylinder Block in the area of the Generator and you should see an abbreviated date cast into the Block, the engines were used within about 4 - 5 weeks of that date usually. There was a distributor change at serial number 124635 (1950) You should also find a casting date on the gearbox housing too. You may also find a date cast into the Cylinder Head under the Valve Cover actually in with the Valve Gear.Does it look as though the engine number has been ground off on the area between the oil filler and the coil or does it look as though there has been no number stamped in there at all? The Starter/Generator and the Control Box would all carry a date....John

I'm guessing your distributor is dated March 1949?

My radiator has Ser Nos "KT1875" and "536" so I guess that leads nowhere as I checked the internet and can't locate the manufacturer, although there are historical references back to 1915! Incidentally, I had my radiator renovated during the restoration - the old radiator guy told me never to replace it, as it is real quality, far superior to the after market radiators available today.

If you check all the date casts John gave, my guess you will narrow the tractor manufacture date down to a two or three month bracket.

Why would someone remove the engine serial number (or should I not ask)? You've looked for the number in the right place?

Bob,
Thank you for the reply, I am going to go out and check the distributor and the radiator. I don't have the original starter or generator, someone had put an alternator on it at some time. I will let you know what I find on the distributor and the radiator.

Thanks again,

John (Ohio)

John. Long shot here but both the Lucas starter motor and generator on my TEA20 have the month and year of manufacture stamped on them. That may give you a clue, however my TEA20-85 Ser No TEA 341439 was manufactured 10 July 1953 and the starter motor dated 9 53, so obviously I can't have the original starter motor.

I have a spare reconditioned Lucas D3A4 distributor and looking at it the last number to the right on the data plate appears to be a date? The one I have is embossed "8 54" so at a guess that may be August 1954?

The original radiator made by Coventry Radiator & Presswork Co Ltd has a serial number. I wonder if that is traceable?

John(UK) may know if any other serial numbers are traceable.
