Afternoon Everyone. A few days ago I posted regarding a freind of mine who bought an old 1952 TEA-20 almost the same as mine. His engine was in pretty poor shape. We were in the process of re-building it over the weekend. (All new parts) We got to the timing part of the job. The new top gear or wheel has no timing mark on it what so ever nor does the bottom sprocket. Question now is how do we find out how to time this properly. Im sure there is someone out there that can assist us. Thanks on behalf of a buddy,, Barry

How about putting the old ones on, lining them up, taking note of which tooth has the marks, and making your own marks on the new ones?

Hi Barry, You are in luck; I just went to clear out some space in the chicken house and didn't I find a crankshaft with the timing gear still on it, and the mark is quite obvious.
There is the point of a tooth directly over the key. From it, count tooth points counterclockwise 8 teeth (not counting the one over the key). The timing mark is very slightly to the left of the point of the eighth tooth.

Now I am looking at an old cam timing gear and describing this will be tricky...OK there are four holes where it bolts to the cam, and then four outer holes that hold the weights. If you look carefully at the four outer holes, you will see that they are all in slightly different places relative to the tooth points. Find the one that lines up closest to the point of a tooth. The timing mark is one and a half teeth counterclockwise (looking from the weight side)from there i.e. in a valley.
To confirm which bolt hole this is: on mine, there is a small hole (maybe for oil drainage) very near the bolt that is across from the bolt nearest the timing mark.
Whew.
Now once you have the crank gear on, rotate the crank until the timing mark on the gear is pointing at the camshaft. At this point you will have to rotate the cam to ensure the valves are in the right place and bolt on the timing gear with the mark pointing at the mark on the crank gear. Read the manual a lot as I think it's beyond me to explain it without actually going through the motions on an engine.
Maybe someone else can help with the rest?
Jim

After doing what Jim said I would put a degree wheel on it to see where #1 intake valve is opening and closing just to be certain before buttoning up the engine. Might help if you had the cam specs.
