Farmall M diesel

A friend and I went shopping for a tractor today. He was responding to an add for a Farmall "M" diesel. I am guessing the tractor in question was about 50 years old, but I don't know the exact year. Although I am familiar with the all-fuel John Deeres, this tractor started on gasoline and then you threw a lever and it went into a diesel mode. It had spark plugs AND injectors! This was a new scheme to me, and my buddy ran like a rabbit away from it, even though it was in nice shape. Can anyone fill me on this tractor, as far as reliability, strengths and weaknesses. It seemed to us like a maintenance nightmare, but if you could keep everything working right it could be a real workhorse! Any comments will be appreciated.

Gary

I appreciate all your comments, but would like a few more comments on potential problems. I have heard about a tendency towards cracked heads, for instance.

Thanks for all your responses.

Gary

The MD-450D did have a tendancy to crack the heads, but it was due to the owner not letting it warm up before working it, or not letting it cool down. As long as it was warmed up and then cooled down properly, they were alrite.

Jon,

Thanks for that qualifier. In other words, it's like most everything else, if you want it to work right, read the manual! This looked like a old workhorse to me!

i just bought a super MD, haven't got it home yet. It does seem complicated. how does the engine crank on gasoline in a diesel engine with out octane knocking? has the compression ratio of the engine been lowered to allow this?

When you push that changeover lever forward, four things happen:

1. A third valve is opened to a chamber in the head of each cylinder to reduce the compression ratio to 6:1. This chamber contains the spark plug as well.

2. A switch is opened to unground the magneto. In diesel mode, the magneto is grounded so there is no spark to the plugs.

3. Butterflys are set in the manifold to allow air to flow through the carb. These are set in diesel mode so that air does not go through the carb.

4. The carb float is released so gas can flow to the carb. In diesel mode, the float is locked up, shutting off the gas flow to the carb.

When you start him up, you should let it run a few minutes (depends on how cold it is) to warm. Then pull the switch over lever back first and then quickly advance the diesel speed control to max. If you advance the diesel speed control first, this results in diesel fuel getting in the spark plug chambers and fouling the plugs, making it harder to start. The book says to switch to gas mode when shutting down, which will also clean out the spark plug chambers. I don't think you need to do that if you follow the above start up procedure.

I have 2 MD's that have been in the family for 52 years! They are in tip top shape. I just finished repainting them this past summer. They are definately work horses. Aside from general care and maintence these tractors are fairly simple. I would recommend the tractor.

Here is a picture of my MD. Bought it last year and restored it. One in good shape can go a lot of work. The MDs were built 1941 to 1952.

IH used the gasoline starting system on diesels for years. There are a lot of them still around. Did the one you looked at run good?? How much did they want for it?? Where is it?? If you want to see some pictures, go into the gallery and search on MD.

Haas,

The tractor looked to be in good shape with fresh paint, but we didn't hear it run...my buddy was to scared of it to put them thru the trouble.
They wanted $2500 for it, which considering what the John Deeres bring in this area, and the shape it was in, I thought was a steal. The tractor is located in Chester County, PA.

Thanks for responding,

Gary
