Took my Super A head to a machine shop. They want $475 to rebuild it, needs just about everything. Can you buy a rebuilt head cheaper? Does this seem a little high to you? It does to me.

Seems high to me also.I guess it depends where you live,I'm north of st.louis 20 miles. Depending if your's is early or late super a kit which includes valves, springs, guides, keepers& a head gasket set list for about $170.00 .I can ship those for about $145.00 ups included. Some of these machine shop's are pretty pricey.I would think the machine work should be 75-100.00.Good luck Gene cell 314-313-9948 if you need help.

The expensive part is not the valve train kit, more than likely for that price the machine shop is machining and installing hardened valve seats. If that is the case then the price is only a little expensive and is only slightly more than it cost when I had a tractor done about 10 years ago.

Most machine shops will not seat new valves into the old soft seats. Soft seats were never meant for unleaded gas, and over time the have " built a tolerance up" to the unleaded gas, they are "seasoned" to it in a sense. A machine shop is worried if they machine these old seats for new valves they will never last with unleaded gas.
Hope that this helps everyone see why the price is much higher than just what a valve train kit costs.
a full head reman normall costs between $350- $425 for the seats and all. Sometimes you can find a shop that will do it for around $300 but that is getting really rare.

Seems a little high to me. I would take the idea of pricing the parts to fix it, then you will know if the price is high or not.

see what valves/springs and guides cost on this site and compare it with the shops prices. i took one to get rebuilt a couple of years ago and it cost about 90 bucks , but i supplied the parts.then you will know how much of that prices is labor.

Lots of Super A heads around. Last one cost me 75 bucks with new valves. Unless you like to see money burn. Course cheap is my middle name.

I took a Cub Cadet Kohler engine to get it bored .010, & with a new piston-rings-connecting rod--plus gaskets, it spoiled $425.
