1940 model A with sn FAA 21680 with hand crank start. Does one of the "A's" in the SN represent a hand crank model ?

No all As had FAA as a prefix to the number.

Yep, looks like 1940 A. If no starter then most likely you don't have a choke rod that goes back to the operators area either. With magneto ignition these tractors are easy to start with the crank if the timing is set properly. Dave

No, the FAA is Farmall A and carried on to cover the Super A. A Farmall B would have serial number prefix of FAB. In the first Farmall A and B tractors there was no provision for a starter, a Bosch no battery generator could be supplied to drive lights for the lighting attachment
