Hey Allen or anyone. I have a IH 986. Was wondering how do you check the hydralic fluid in one of these. I know where the stick is and all that but does it have to be running with the lift down, up or what. I checked and filled it when it was not running and it looked full. Then I started it and checked it and it was in the add range. Also there is a little yellow light that comes on the dash and right beside it a red light that looks like a gear with a oil drop in it. I can't read what they are. I feel though that they have something to do with the hydralic fluid. I have a IT book but it does not tell what anything is for or how to check the fluid only how to take the tractor apart. Isn't that crazy. Oh well Any help is appreciated. Thanks alot

Gear drive tractors are checked with the engine off. Hydrostatic drive tractors are checked with the engine running.

If it was low enough when you filled it the first time there may have been some cavities unfilled.

After you ran it some of the oil pumped into those cavities.

Fill it again. And like bob says, the hitch is not a big issue whether it is up or down. And a little over full don't hurt either.

When do the lights come on? A red light with a drop of oil in it should come on when the clutch is in.

On our 1086 we have always checked with the tractor off and 3-point up.

An operator's manual is a great resource.

Almost certainly, the operator's manual (sounds like you need one) will tell you to check the oil with the tractor shut off, lift down, although the amount of oil the lift cylinder holds is pretty small in comparison to the total oil volume and shouldn't affect the reading a GREAT deal.
