I got this a couple days ago, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what I have. I made up a little web site with pics.(link below)

From the sn (738) this appears to be a 1963, and the 237th 806 made (they started with 501).

Can anybody tell me if this is at all rare? Obviously 806's are everywhere, but you don't see a lot of International 806's that are not wheatlands, do you?

Are those the right fenders? They look like they go on a Farmall 806- I think this had the round fenders.

I'm in the market for:
-grill, -large "international" hood emblems, -ether injector, -seat, -steering knuckles, king pins (they have been welded, various steering components-the steering is very sloppy
-parking brake not working
-Tach not working- maybe send out for rebuild?
-TA not working- to expensive to fix

ALSO- There is no charging system installed at the moment. The former owner installed 2 12 v batteries on the assumption that it was a 24v system. I don't think this is right.

The original generator is gone, and a delco alternator is there, not wired up. He did however give me a John Deere 24v generator and voltage regulator. So- since those batteries are nearly new and expensive (John Deere strongbox), I think I might wire up the 24v generator.

None of the instruments work, or are disconnected. Clearly, I'll have to wire them to one of the batteries to get 12v.

A real fixer-upper! I don't plan to make it a show tractor, but I'd like to fix much of this and use it on the farm. The engine is fine (a little blow-by out the bottom- not bad). Gears all seem fine. Clutch decent.

What can you guys tell me about this?

I second the opinion that someone mated a farmall rear end to the front of a wheatland.

These tractors are now going on 40 years old and even us humans at 40, don't have all matching numbers anymore!

Just seems like yesterday Grandpa let me drive that new shiny 706!

I have to say, the Wheatland tractors are mean looking. The fat tires and massive fenders are cool as sh**! Good luck Ironandsteel, keep us posted on the rebuild. Pictures appriciated.

The "Standard" "International" or "Wheatland" model of 806 did not have a 3-point hitch, flat-top fenders, or an adjustable front axle.

Your tractor looks to me like a Farmall with the axle moved back and the wrong tag... but then again the headlights being in the grille points to it being an Standard or Wheatland...

This is one example of the Wheatland model:

It is ad number 211028

Yours is a confusing tractor!

the 806 has a 12 volt system, originally 2 6volts in series. you can use your 2 12s in parallel, since you already have them. my jd4010 has a 24 volt system and it can be a pita. sell the jd parts and get a 12 volt delco 10SI alternator. wiring diagrams are on this site in the archives. if the steering arms are already welded, the steering slop can't be coming from them. most likely, its in the tie rod ends and maybe where the pitman arm bolts on. the park lock pawl can be accessed under the top cover. does the tractor have a rhythmic clunk in the transmission when backing up? if so, the thing was put in park while it was still in gear. a coomon ocurrence with worn 06 shifting. the park pawl locks into the reverse gear when the lever is down. make sure its in neutral and take your foot off the clutch BEFORE you drop the park lock handle. the front axle still has me baffled. i still think the rear section is from a farmall, in which case the fenders are right.

Thanks for the info. On the steering, pretty much every moving part in the whole mechanism is worn. When the hydraulic cylinder actuates, everything lifts up a couple inches. At some point I'll just have to take this all apart and see what's up. I could probably bore out and machine busings for the worn areas.

Alternatively, maybe a boneyard will sell me what I need at a decent price.

Good info on the parking lock. I read somewhere that when I go to fix this, I can upgrade it to the newer style (like on an 856), and that is more robust. Is this the case?

Regarding batteries- it always seemed that parallel is ok if both are equally good. I think that if one batt goes bad (shorted cell), then the good battery ends up supplying all the current. But these both look to be similar condition (I'll take a lok at the date codes).

I guess before doing this, I better see how fast it turns over on 12v and if it starts ok. On a 70 degree day, I need to run the starter about 5 seconds I'd say to get it going. I'm sure when its cold it will be tough. Of course, when I get the ether injector on, it should be fine.

So- do you think this is a "put together" tractor, or an odd model, or simply a normal, early example of an International 806?

well, you learn something every day... i looked in the 806 parts manual, and there is listed an adjustable front axle for the international models. same shorter spindles (compared to the farmall) as the fixed front axle, but adjustable width-wise. yours definitely has the I806 grille and front axle and clutch housing serial # plate. i'd say someone mated a farmall rear end to the front and center sections of a wheatland.
btw, the industrial version would be designated as a 2806.
as to the batteries, i'm running my 966 and 806 with just one good 12 volt battery. maybe you could do the same and save one battery for later.
the updated park lock has a stronger spring and can be added. my brother did the one on my 966 without a lot of hassle.
there are 2 bushings and a thrust bearing on each spindle, still available from cih. there is also a bushing on the steering arm. all those bushings being worn could add up to a lot of slop. if the ball on the back of the wishbone is tight, but you have some movment between the ball and the socket, there should be shims between the socket and the cap to remove.

Checked out the pictures. Looks like you have a good project ahead! But overall, looks functional.
