There have been several recent posts regarding alternators and generators, 12 vs 6, for Farmalls.

I recently have taken an interest in a Farmall which has been in teh family and I know little about how my father cobbled it togather to run. I do know that at one point he put a 12 Volt battery in an blow out all the lights. The tractor runs fine and I know that it does not charge.

What ramifications are there in running this machine with a 12 Volt without any retrofiting of starters, alternators/generator, plugs, coils, spark, etc.

I guess a second question is should I be thinking about going over this whole system and setting it up as either 6 Volt or 12 Volt?

If you decide to go 12V follow these instructions. I was very pleased with my conversion. David....Link

greatest advantage to going 12 volt is you may change batteries from vehicles or tractors. i have more tractors than I have batteries

I would use a 12 volt alternator even though they make 6 volt altenators. Buy the Delco Remy 10SI alternator. Buy Napa's 12 volt coil with the built-in ballast resistor p/n IC14SB, cost is about $18.00. Hal

Just leave it 6V. When you add the 12v system you have to get a 12v genny or an alternator, with the latter you have to make some modifications to fit under the hood right. As for igniton you would have to chagne nothing if its still a mag. but if it is a dist. then you need a ballast resistor. all the rest of the ignition does not have to changed. The starter can be left alone. My personaly feeling is that i would keep it orginal and thus 6v just my thoughts though. It keeps the tractor 100% orginal and a good 6v system will start an H just fine, just make sure to have good heavy battery cables 00 gauge or better, not weak 2 gauge then youll have all kinds of troubles.

You can use the original starter w/ a 12 volt battery as long as you don't crank on it too long, obviously you must replace all bulbs w/ 12 volt bulbs, and the coil needs changed also. They sell mounting brackets to install alternators.

Thanks for your reply.

It is amazing, but I can run the beast all day long wihtout an alternator or generator on one charge of the battery.

I suppose it would be easy enough to go make to a 6 Volt battery by just buying a battery and new cables any time I like. In the meantime it sounds like I am doing no harm.

So long as it is kept running (ie. you're not using the starter) your tractor could run 30 - 40 hours or longer on a single battery charge.

That is correct. I am very careful about the number of starts and stops I make. If I am skidding logs I run it continually. If I am using a cart/wagon to pick up firewood I start and stop it about four times in a day before recharging.

Fixing up the system would be nice, but we will see. I have twenty irons in the fire all the time and a nice to have is low on the list.
