I am looking for a 12 volt generator that looks similar to an original 6 volt generator. Is there such a thing. Now there is an ugly automobile alternator sticking out the side of this tractor. I like the 12 volt system but I do not like the way this looks. Any suggestions?

If the alternator was mounted right and painted it would not look ugly. Can be made to blend in.

This alternator on Shawn's SC I used the pulley off the generator. I had to drill the alternator shaft and tap for a bolt to hold on the pulley.

That looks very neat. I had to replace the steering u-joints on the Super C that I had. They didn't have any zerk grease fittings on them, but the new ones did. Sure took the slop out the steering. Hal

Yeppers Hal,on replacing steering u-joints. Need to replace one on this unit also. One of them things I keep putting off, but will get it done next week... You get the replacement joints from dealer or local auto parts store.

I also need to get the new battery box I built painted in the next couple of days and then spray the inside with clear "Rock & Chip guard".

There is a local starter /Generator expert that advised me that if I wanted to go to 12 volt on my H or A to let him rework the generator and it would be worthy to charge 12volt system and then there are no physical changes. Any reputable shop should be able to do this.

But that will most likely cost more than what Jim N suggested. Set 6 and 12 volt Delco generators side-by-side and you will not be able to tell them apart except for what it says on the tag.

Thank you for your information. What wiring changes would need to be made if I go to a 12 volt generator. With this alternator the negative is grounded.

Need a 12 volt regulator. They usually mount on the generator. The polarity can be left as negative (battery negative at chassis ground) as long as the 12v regulator is for negative ground. Then polarize it and should be good. The ammeter would already be reading correctly since it had to be reversed for the neg ground alternator. Starter and lights don"t care about polarity. Wiring to distributor should also be good since it too, had to be reversed for the neg ground system. Bob M who posts here has some great wiring diagrams for these tractors. Google for them.

There is very little difference in appearance of any 6 volt or 12 volt generator. Just find one that is in working condition and install it. Whether it is from a Ford, Chrysler, or G.M., really doesn"t matter.

Sorry to disagree, Ford generators (and others) are B configured electrically. This means (in short) that the field is internally grounded, and supplied with "hot" voltage from the regulator. Not at all a bolt on proposition. Different polarizing is also needed. Any Delco from a Later farmall will be fine. Pulley, and shaft length is at times different, but not the function. JimN

But if he is changing from an alternator back to a generator, the voltage regulator and wiring will be all wrong anyhow.

I agree, I just looked ahead for issues with voltage regulators that might be a hot wire or two. JimN
