404 clutch noise. What the heck is it...

My 404 has developed a noise when I engage the clutch and I have no clue what it might be. The best I can describe it is a grinding noise but that's not exactly it. Scraping maybe?
The clutch is silent when it's all the way disengaged and silent when it's all the way engaged. The only time I hear the noise is when I'm in the process of engaging the clutch, as it passes from disengaged to engaged. And, it does it if the tractor is moving or stopped and in any gear including reverse.

I did grease the throughout bearing today. No change. still noisy.

Anyone have any idea? Should I panic? I have a ton of stuff to do with the tractor the next couple of weeks...

Well, whatever it is, looks like the tractor will need to be split to fix it. Greasing the bushing didn't help and that's about all that can be done with it together.

One more thing to fix when I can get to it.

Anyone know about the clutch kits they sell here on YT? Or should I look elsewhere?

Could be dry splines / wear in the clutch disc. Possibly rivets coming loose on the clutch center/ hub.

Probably a dried up release bearing

That was my guess since I couldn't figure out what else it could be. I was disappointed the grease didn't help. :(
It just started this, but I guess I'll have to decide how much longer to run it as is.
I suppose it'll need a clutch sometime soon anyway. It would certainly be silly to go to the trouble of splitting it and not replace everything while I was there...

J Saw that (heard it) on a super C a couple years ago. It was the pilot bearing. Jim
