Super M steering gear question

Howdy, boys: You know the half-round sector gear (19 tooth) which engages the worm gear in the steering box on top of the front bolster? Well, mine is badly worn and I wish to replace it with a newer, better (32 tooth) full circle gear which I have on hand - thanks to ebay.

My question is: How the dickens do I pull that gear? I can't see a way to get a puller on it, since there is so little clearance between the gear and the steering box. Somebody must have figured out a way to tackle this one. Please share you method(s) of success.

As always, thanks in advance to all participating on the forum.

Mike, when I rebuilt the bolster on my h I jacked the front wheels 1" off the ground. I then loosened the nut on the shaft holding the sector gear without removing it. Put a small 2X4 on top of the nut and hit it with a ballpeen hammer. I believe it is a tapered shaft and needed to be driven down. Its been a few years but that should work. Matt

Not tapered, splined. Mine was easy to pull. That may have had to do with fact that the nut was loose more than anything else--splines probably got a little wore. Remember, when you hammer the shaft you are also moving the thrust bearing and that will fight you as well.

I got a pair of channel locks on it and lifted. Easy as can be.
