Forgive me if I dont use the correct names for the parts but I have been working with my Grandpa"s 51 Super A lately. He can"t get out and work on it anymore so I"m planting his garden for him this year. While I was driving it I noticed oil spitting out from under the oil cap onto the hood of the tractor. It was just enough to form a black ring on the hood but not enough to puddle up. Any ideas of what the problem may be? I"m going to change the oil as soon as I can so maybe that will help. Thanks in advance for the help!

That oil cap is also the crankcase breather.

A LITTLE oil spattering around there is PROBABLY not a big deal, but as it gets worse, it is a sign of engine "blow-by"... combustion products sneaking past the piston rings.

If it isn't used much, or hard, it will probably go YEARS without attention, if the blowby isn't rapidly getting worse.

Some guys swear by various forms of monkey pi$$ to loosen the rings... I'm sure one of those guys will come along with their ideas. Who knows, one of them may actually HELP loosen the piston rings!

Thanks for the info. It's not alot of oil but like I said it is enough to form a black ring.

Should I do something to try to fix this or let it be for now?
