What is the correct procedure to crank start 41 A. I have already learned the incorrect way to the tune of 10 stitches. Does the snap of the impulse have any bearing concerning the position of the crank.

I don't take a chance at 60 years old, even if the mag is set right. I put the other half in the Suburban, attach a tow rope and pull start my 41 B. It hasn't kicked back since!!

As CNKS said, pull up only. Another little tip is to NOT wrap your thumb around the crank. Keep it right up next to your index finger.

Get it timed up right nd it shouldn't kick, but those to rules, pull, don't push or spin, and keep your thumbs clear hould keep you out of serious trouble. IIRC, Ol' Rog wears a pice of PVC pipe ovr his forearm when crankin' just to keep from breakin' his arm again.

You do need to get her timed up right, though, to keep her from kickin.

My crank bites the pulley at about 5 o'clock and the mag trips at about 11 o'clock, just about right for standing to the right and just forward of the tractor and pulling up.

Set the timing at TDC, by the book. That is the most important part. I have cranked a mag equipped H many times (hundreds, thousands?, I don't know) without a single kick back. To be safe, don't spin the engine. Pull the crank up 1/2 revolution. Then do it again until it starts. Do not push it down. I have violated those rules many times without incident. But I do it at my own risk. It is "do as I say, not as I do."

As to the impulse, it should trip at the top of the stroke or barely before, when the handle of the crank is 180 degrees from the bottom. If that is not the case, something is wrong.
