Have a 504 International that about 6 months ago would sputter like it was running out of gas then kill. Tractor would restart and run fine for a few weeks then do it again. Well she did the same thing last night and will not restart. I can trace power to the coil but nothing out of the coil. I have change 3 different coils 1 new, 1 used and 1 out of another tractor that is working. Still no spark out of the coil. Any ideas what I can look for? Can"t find any broken wire, however might start replacing then 1 and a time...

Thanks for any help

I would check for power on the primary wire the if no voltage, go back through the wires to the ignition switch. If all looks good, ohm wires to ensure good connections... Maybe someone else has an idea.

If you have a ballast resistor between the ignition switch & coil it could be defective. You need to see if there's battery voltage from the ignition switch to the coil when the switch is in the on position. Check at the switch first to make sure there's voltage on the terminal going to the coil. If there's no voltage present on that terminal see if you have lights. Could be a bad switch if there's lights.

If you have voltage on the terminal make sure your points are open and check for voltage on the coil's terminals. If there's no voltage check the feed wire to the switch for
voltage that's usually fed from the starter's solenoid. That little terminal is hot all the time. Could have a broken feed wire to the switch. Hal

Make sure you're testing when the points are open. Something might be grounded in the distributor, check the connectors for the points and condensor.

When i turn the key on I get power to both terminals + and - on the coil. But nothing out of the feed that gos to the distributor cap. Would this be a problem with the points?

thanks again

Clean those points with a piece of 320 wet or dry.
Hal
PS: Make sure you have voltage at the points too.

Where does the power to the coil come form> does it travel though the Plug wire (center of coil to the center of the distributer) or the copper wire from the Coil terminal to the sire of the Distriputor...

Thanks

You should have around 12 volts on the small + and - wires into and out of the coil. The big wire out the top will only have voltage for an instant when the points open and close, you don't want to be touching it then because that's the ignition spark - probably 20,000 volts.

If you're not getting a spark, replace the points and condensor. Make sure you set the point gap correctly. Or replace them with electronic ignition for about $100 from one of the advertisers on this site.
