Some of you may have read my thread where I get my rear handed to me. If you haven't, you may want to so the following makes sense.
I'd like to address two groups of folks.
First, I'd like to say something to the "crusty old buggers" (Ron in Nebr's term. ) who posted in that thread, specifically: GordoSD, CNKS, mkirsch, and Ron in Nebr... and those guys who have chimed in for other threads I've posted:

Thanks. I realize that there are a number of folks looking out for me in here, and when I didn't add details with my story it made it sound like I was running clueless into the night. It feels reassuring that you guys will stand up and say "WHOA" when you think it's necessary.
Please understand that I pay a lot of attention to what is told to me in here, and I never rush in. And when you haven't heard about something because I haven't asked, it's usually because I haven't asked in here. But I have asked someone, even if I think I know. Regardless, your posts were heard for how they were written, concerns for my well being, and I thank you for them.

Now, to those who were just out to bash me... How can I express this without offending anyone... I can't. Eat me. If you don't know me, and don't know my story, and have nothing constructive to add other than insults and abuse, then you are barking up the wrong tree. I can dish it out worse than you can take it, but won't because this isn't that type of forum. So, two questions for you to ask yourself. (Don't bother answering in here, because I really don't care)
1) Why do you feel the need to jump in with insults when you have no clue of the facts?

2) Where were you for other unsafe threads, like guys drinking a case of beer every time he works on a 9,000 pound tractor? You weren't anywhere.
For those of you who are worried I'm going to leave this forum, or those of you who hoped I would leave , well, you can lock that up. I didn't make it through 16 years in the military without having a thick skin. And when I look at why the comments are coming, I can see my part in it, and work on correcting that... well, except for the blatant bashing. As far as some people getting their nickers in a bunch over my April fool's joke, I don't know what to tell you. That's something you'll have to come to grips with. Am I a kid? No. But I don't like to think being mature is having to be a horses rear end. I am very serious when the occasion calls for it. But generally I like to think of myself as a good natured, personable guy. My humor is built from years in the Navy, so it may not mix well with the farm community. I'll try to tone it down. But it's not like I was the first guy to post an April Fool's joke on this forum.
Anyway, my tractor is sitting at a show 20 miles away. (My friend trailered it and drove it there, and dropped it off all while I was at work... just so you know it wasn't me with my SUV) Tomorrow and this weekend I'm going to go enjoy it and the hundreds of other old tractors. Maybe I'll see a couple of you out there. And I will see you again on this forum.
And I'll probably have more questions.

Mike,
I've yanked your chain a little here and there, but I hope you realized it was done in a joking manner (like the tire thing), and I think you've done a great job in a short time. I've got a great sense of humor, it just doesn't always translate to text real well. Anyway, keep on keepin' on.
As for giving kids a ride. You were in the Navy. I know that safety and thinking ahead were drilled into you. While it rankles some, and I understand their concerns, commons sense tells me that I'm not wrong in how I do it. First, I never do so on ANYTHING other than flat ground. I have one arm around the child during any motion (throttle is slightly above idle and is the notched type), and I never leave first gear. The rides are no more than 5 minutes, in full view of the parents, and no operation is performed other than driving in a circle away from streets or cars.
And if I were driving my Grandkids around, I would darn well expect that other people may voice their concern once, but then butt out. It does not rise to the level of child endangerment or neglect, therefore it falls under the purview of Parent's choice. My life is so much richer for the memories I have of my Dad / Uncles taking me for rides on just about everything around when I was a kid. And they always took reasonable care and thought it out before just slapping me on something. I just don't know what's happening to us as a society. I, and all my friends I was raised with, had go-carts (which would have easily run right under a car and turned me into hamburger), motorcycles and mini-bikes, (which we jumped, wheelied, and crashed often), BB Guns (that would "put an eye out"), Horses and Mules (that had serious brain damage and would run right under a tree limb), pocket knifes, sticks, slingshots, and other implements of destruction. And our parents, instead of parking us in front of a tv or computer, actually watched us, taught us, lectured and punished us, to assure that nobody was ever seriously injured. And that thing they call the "tapestry" of life, for me, was richer for all the above. I guarantee, that those pictures you took Mike, will be some of your children's most prized possesions when they are older.
And given how much some folks have invested emotionally in your project, and how you DO seem to be moving at a record pace. I thought your April Fools joke was well thought out, and executed well. I've been dumped and destroyed in my life, by a few beautiful girls; but I can still enjoy a good girlfriend joke. And if I was so "scarred" by a past experience as to be unable to differentiate between a joke and my own trauma, I think I'd go to therapy and work out my issues, rather than visit them on you. Just flow with it Mike. See Ya.

Dave

Not long after I found this forum,I was scanning threw pictures one evening and found a picture of a Farmall Cub that a proud father and son restored together.

The next picture was of that same Cub burned so badly in a barn fire that it was warped and no longer sat straight.

A little later on,I found a picture of a newly restored TD-14 crawler, which in itself was a major undertaking. The caption under it stated that it was destroyed in a barn fire, and the date was given.

Close to home, this winter,a guy was working at a Massey-Harris 30 in his shop when there was a fire. The man lost his livelihood, the lady lost her tractor.

Fires with gas powered tractors are a REAL possibility, especially with unexperienced people in possession of them.If I lost my shop to fire,it would represent a loss of one tractor and one antique car,and my enjoyment.

Your ''April Fools Joke'',was in poor taste.Especially to those who've lost people or possessions to fire.

Thats my 2cents worth,if anyone cares.

Mkirsch. You replied to my post asking "since when is "brag" a bad word?" Nothing in my posts reference the word "brag" and I don't recall seeing the word in any posts or saying anything negative about the word "brag". You must be replying to the wrong poster or hit the wrong reply button as I have no idea what you are saying or mean. It shows up in reply to my post under the classic view which is what I use. My post regarding the hayride insurance was just being informational in regards to the dangers of pulling a hayrack by the inexperienced and nothing more or nothing less. Kind regards, bc

Mike, unfortunately lots of your posts do sound like you are a loose cannon, maybe some more explaination would calm people down. PLEASE NO CHILDREN RIDING!!!!! Let them climb all over around, etc. You are relative inexperienced in the tractor area but EVERY year there are stories in the ag news about children hurt/KILLED. In the last 4 months two 40-50 EXPERIENCED farmers were killed in grain bins doing things they had done for years.

I lost one of ny good friends yesterday, he knew what he was doing, but things just flat out happen sometimes that we cant control, this alone is reason enough to not joke around. Just the thought of not being safe really tears at my nerves..... ..... .....

A child riding tractor with carefull driver at LOW speeds with no trailing implements or wagons is in no more danger than child riding skateboard, bicycle or playing football.

Check your friendly neighborhood Emergency Room, and see how many skate board, bicycle, football,(in Illinois there must be an ambulance present during games) are reported WEEKLY. Hand throttle on tractor, one hand on wheel, one hand holding child 3hands!!! Small platform on our older tractors, one foot for clutch, one for brakes, where to put the kid? INEXPERIENCED operator + panic situation= disaster.

Maybe so but when I was growing up kids riding on tractors were every day occourence even when plowing and running full throttle on road (I agree this should never be done) and I never heard of a serious accident, on the other had there have been 2 kids killed on bicycles in sight of my front yard, I can recall 3 kids drowning in my nieghborhood, 2 killed in hunting accidents, several killled in farm truck accidents and one I remember killed on horse. I have friction throttle on my tractors and they will stay set without holding your hand on them and I can not concieve panic situation while tooling along on H at half throttle in second gear.

Can we friendly disagree on this, I don't think kids belong joy riding, where there is no room with a newer operator. Many times panic situation comes from NOT what you do, but from the cell phone user who didn't see a bright red tractor, or the person who thought you were going faster when he rear ended you.

While on tractor safety topic I can name at least a dozen adults that have been killed in tractor and combine accidents. Had 65 year old friend break rule number 1 last year got off tractor with tiller running and he now has one leg missing to well above knee. So I agree you can not be too cautious around machinery.

You are so right about those who seem to know everything and insist they are right over and ove. A few days ago I posted asking a very simple question---Hoe do you adjust the brakes on an M. Now any one who has done that knows the drawbar must me attended to. In stead of good answeres I got all kinds of knarly stuff such as "Why move the drawbad et." It has been my observation that thwere is getting to be more disinformation and less good advice.' Dont need it. Just a knowegable answer would help Henry

I'm with you Mike, there are some miserable ,discourteous, nasty pricks that come onto this forum and look for any way at all to make their point of view look important, make themselves look important by picking out some inane little oversight and making it as big as their egos..they don't realize that the majority on this forum look at them for what they are..nafty pricks.

Hope ya enjoy the show!

As for the post that prompted this one, as ya know, it's darned hard to know all the details of a situation from just reading a typed post, and things are often taken wrong by some.

Heck, my "neighbor" Allan(who's been around tractors etc. all his life) got flamed big-time not long ago over on the tractor talk board for showing a pic of one of his tractors on his trailer right before he was gonna unload it and AFTER he'd taken the chains and binders off. People jumped to conclusions and thought he'd hauled it with no chains or something, don't remember for sure. Coulda been maybe he'd jokingly said he had(or tied it with a rope or something). Either way, he was getting cyber-chewed out for something he didn't and would never do. As for your April Fools joke...I had a strong suspicion what was up before I even clicked on the link! At least ya got a few people on that National Holliday- heck, I couldn't even pull one over on my kids that day! Must be slipping!

Outstanding!

I expect he'll be quite pleased.

Kinda neat, in my view. One of my tractors is "just" a Farmall. The other is one of the Farmalls I grew up on. My affection for that tractor goes back in tme.

What I see as the neat part is the sentiment of a fellow seeing and driving his tractor after it's in the next hands. Same affection, just going forward.

I like.

Good on ya for all your work gettin' her back goin' again.
