Called IH about bushings for reverse idle and pto shaft for Super M.
For the PTO pilot bushing they want $53 dollars! For that one bushing! That just seems nuts to me.

The reverse idler bushings were around $26, that still seems like a lot but at least they're bigger.

IH didn"t make a set of undersized rings of .030 and I needed a set. I went to my IH dealer and he said he could order a set for $247.00. I went by Napa and he had them in stock for $29.95. One hyd. stop not even original for $22.00.

rebuilding left side final drive for my SA at this moment... needed a fan belt so that $12 is in here too... inner bearing, upper and lower seals, Diff housing seal, $85. If the outer bearing would have been bad (the inner is) tack on another $61. On top of that is $12 / gal gear lube...
Just the price of doing business... a farm is a business... prices are prices.. when a hobbyist begins to "restore" for show and not use prices come as a sticker shock.

price reflects volume... in most cases... but the margin is also greater IMO.
I can walk into my local IH dealership and choose from CIH packaged brake discs for the 560 or A&I packaged... price difference? $43 / ea for the CIH brand, $16 / ea for the A&I....
Now you really want sticker shock? take the hard lines for the Tel-A-Depth system running the fast hitch on a 560... You can still buy these, brand new... They rot out beneath the seat base due to dirt and moisture collection... I end up brazing them with brass... PITA... but I can take it apart and braze it a LOT for $660.... yep.. 2 lines with mounting block on one end to valve and a square manifold on the eother... $660...

It could be worse. I needed a special bolt for a Husqvarna tiller. The bolt and rubber washer came to just under $8.00 with $10.00 S&H. The lock washer and 1/4" x 20 nut was an extra $8.00. Those are under $2.00 a pound at almost any hardware store.

It's my own fault for getting into these situations. I can't leave it alone and I can't stand to do the job half-a$$!

Most people would have flushed the rear with diesel, refilled with oil and went on their merry way. (And I've done that myself on other tractors) But I couldn't leave this one alone, oh no! I had to pull the cover on the rear to clean it good. Then decided it should have new seals. Next thing you know I'm looking too close at the axle bearings. Decided they were'nt good enough. Next the transmission comes apart. (which turned out to be a good thing as the pilot bearing turned up bad). And it goes on and on.

It runs good so I'm leaving the engine alone..... for now.

Sometimes my dealer has good prices, but you have to watch him.

He quoted me a worm gear for my Super A $416.00

I bought the gear, shaft and rebuild kit with shipping $303.00

He made it sound like he would have to order it, so I don't think he has been storing it.

I just got some CNH parts recently for my remote valves on a F504D. $15 for unlatching pistons (2 ea), $3 for a CR-STL 1/4 bal (4 ea)l, $3 for a 5/16 CR-STL ball (2ea), $7 for a 1 1/2 x 3/8 spring (2ea). Total of $70 for a bag of parts that would fit in my shirt pocket, but there were not many options for retrofit.

This is an expensive hobby -- there are others that are cheaper. I thank CaseIH for continuing to provide those parts.

Actually, I don't think it's that expensive of a hobby overall, unless you are into collecting lots of specialty tractors. It's certainly cheaper than restoring cars.
And when you factor in how long the stuff lasts, I mean after re-doing the rear and trans on the Super M, it will be good for another 50+ years.

There's two things:
1.It's just the usual dealer sticker shock.
2.I was in the mood to complain.

I agree with you that it's better to have parts available at some price then not at all.

Tex:
I know what you mean; it hurts. And, I while I don't disagree with you, I can see both sides of the situation. As a business person I certainly would not tie up money in manufacturing low volume parts and then keep them available in inventory for 55 years and then sell them cheap.
Generally speaking, high volume parts sell cheaper than low volume parts due to the cost to carry them and low turnover. Regardless, it is a miracle we can get ANY parts from CNH for a super M. mike

I understand both sides too, having been in the small business world in the past. I'm glad that parts are available at all for some of these things.

I think C/IH is so large that they are slow to react to the market place and that more people are fixing up these old tractors. Anyway I'm certain they make a bigger profit off of one new tractor sale then a decade of bushings for Super M's!

The company I work for is massive and they are definately more re-active than pro-active.

Mike Your right, I've been amazed recently just what CaseIH do stock. Brake pedal return springs are close to $30., but you try and find something else that will work. During my recent SA painting I lost the washer around the hydraulic fill plug, they had it in stock.

Hugh, trampoline springs (when shortened) worked great for my 240. Nice and shiny too. David.

Guess I should raise the price on the H and M brake pedal return springs. I'm getting only half that much.

Well, I just tried to buy headlight gaskets for my H. The dealer wanted $12 each! Holy cow! I ended up ordering them from an aftermarket supplier for less than $3 each...I think the last time I bought them at the dealer they were closer to $6 or so.

Last I checked Jphn Deere had them for about $5.00. The last aftermarket rubber parts I bought were not worth using, they broke in a year.

Sure. But, that aftermarket dealer hasn't had his money tied up with carrying them in stock for 55 years either. He jumped on the bandwagon just when the volume started to pick back up - 50 years later, when the restoration hobby is building up momentum. So, what do we do? We "thank" the manufacturer and dealer by kicking them in the teeth and buying from a "johnny-come-lately" aftermarket manufacturer/dealer. We don't mean to, but we react to price without regard to what the oem guy went through to have them available at all times over the years. I know - I do the same thing. But, even if you don't buy from CNH, don't automatically bash them for the cost of carrying parts they probably should have dropped long ago.....
