Broke the v belt on my Bush Hog finish mower yesterday. Called a local

tractor supply. They wanted $74 for a new belt. Checked on line found one

for $43. Someone said "Try NAPA. I did and got the exact same # number

replacement belt for $19.97. I am beginning to think that some of these
tractor supply companies must think we have "Stupid" stamped on our

foreheads or something. Just sign me "Fed Up"

I have a hand truck that always has a flat tire when I need to use it.The last trip to TSC I looked at a tire mounted on a rim.$35.00 for a 4.5x3 or something like that.I only paid $38.00 for the hand truck.Well, with a little work I found the leak and fixed that tire. That was two weeks ago and the tire is still hard.

I think if you are eating belts on a regular basis, something is wrong, pulley alignment or dirt getting on the belt, or? Belts do vary, the industrial grades or severe duty usually are better. I don't think the equipment manufacturer's are making their own, it's a matter of specing the right belt.

Just keep that in mind if that belt blows apart in a couple months. A lot of OEM belts are made to a certain specs in size and quality. I used to think the same thing until I kept having belt troubles on a Dixie Chopper, been buying NAPA belts, replaced every year, bought a Dixie belt 2 years ago, still using it.

Point well taken. You will usually get what you pay for as far as value. My point is it seems that every time I price something at the local tractor dealer. I can find it cheaper some where else. The belt that broke had been on the mower for at least 4 years. The NAPA replacement belt is the same part # as the old one. I just have a lot of trouble with $75 being a fair price for this size belt. I have in the past driven North 50 miles to another dealer and still saved money.

Hugh,
I sell belts and have 5 differant belts of differant quality I can sell with the exact same part number and the prices will vary as much as 50-60%. You are right, $75.00 sounds like a lot for a belt, but this sounds like a big belt. I priced one for a Wheel Horse 60" deck today, $72.00 for it. What is the part number of the belt you got, now you have peaked my interest on this belt.

This is a TM 5 Bush Hog finish Mower. 5 ' wide. The belt that came off was a "B103". I don't think that is the original part # from bush hog . I replaced it with an Industrial Belt # B103 from NAPA. If different quality belts have the same part number how can you be sure you are getting the better quality belt?

That's because B103 is the SIZE of the belt, not its part number.

Your logic here is akin to, "I priced a pair of Size 13 work boots at the local Red Wing store for $74, but I can get a pair of Size 13 work boots at Wal mart for $20. Those Red Wing guys are ripping me off!"

I've been paying about $50 for a B120 belt from the local industrial supply store. I would like a belt that lasts longer or the same quality for a lower price.

OK, If you all think that $75 is a fair price for a good belt then I guess that is what they sell for. I have had that mower for 4 years
bought it used. Never had to put a belt on it before. It just seemed awfully high.

Hugh, maybe it is maybe it isn't. We're just trying to explain to you that just because a part is more expensive one place than another, doesn't mean that they're ripping you off.

There are various levels of quality, especially with belts.
NAPA does indeed use the SAE belt size for the part number, but again, just because the part number is the same in two locations, doesn't mean it's the same exact part from the same source.
