It would seem to me the saw tooth was first, and the notched was an attempt to improve.

Or even better, is there a year range for each type? ie. what years would each type appear on?

On production tractors the notched assembly was first installed on SH serial # 26561 and SMTA serial # 71817.

the notched throttle plate with the replacable square piece came long after production was over on both the h and m and also the supers'. i have a super m parts book that was printed in '59 and it does not yet show the notched plate throttle. only the ratchet tooth one. the notched plate one is the improvement made by ih for replacement.

All my 40's Farmall H's and M's had the saw-tooth throttle... The Super MTA had a notched one when we got it.

Allen is right, saw tooth till 1952 and the first notched were M&W built prior to the friction type

The sawtooth was the first throttle lever IH used on the H's & M's. Later they changed to the square tooth throttle which worked a lot better. I've tried 3 different sawtooth levers on my 1943 H and the lever never stays in place, it always pops back to slow throttle. I bought a square tooth lever instead and it works a lot better. M&W also made friction disc type throttle levers that worked well.

Andy.

Our 41 had a sawtooth from the time I can remember, but later changed to a friction, then a notch. You will probably find that most of them have been replaced 2 or 3 times in their life time, so unless you personally know the history of your tractor (mine was my fathers, and I learned to drive on it), it is only a guess as to what it had originally.

my 1943 H has a very worn out (in need of a new piece on the handle) notched style. A friend of mine has a 1950ish and his is saw-toothed. Neither were pretty...just farm tractors so I'm guessing the notched was 1st....experts tell me diff? I am going to restore mine so don't wanna mess that little detail up.

I'll buy what Rusty said. My 50 H came with a sawtooth, and the 54 SH and 54 SMTA came with notched plates.

Saw tooth came first. I think the notched style was introduced when the supers arrived.

Teach me,

Thought the "notched" were aftermarket? Were they even IH?

Don"t know for sure but I have bought the notched type from IH dealer and they were painted Farmall Red, can"t say what the source was.
