On the f-20 and the standard or M series,
I was wondering why the exhaust on the F-20 is soo much more throaty than a W-6 or an M,
I saw this F-20 on you tube, It was a 38 with one of those hydralic sears loaders in the 40's
It sonded soo much better than this 6 of mine, and m's too,
I mean even with a straight pipe on my 6,
It didnt soundlike that or nearly as good as the F-20,
Is there any reason for this,
Is it longer stroke in the older F series that does this,

Here I thought mine was the only throaty one. No, I agree it's hard to beat the sound from an F-20. I've attached a link to a video of my recently rebuilt F-20 engine. All new 4" sleeves, pistons, and the whole works. Even has a NOS block. Listen for yourself.

One dirt bike is a KDX 200 and the other is a KX 250. Neither one has seen much use lately but maybe we can fix that this summer. I love the sound of an F-20 myself. Hope to have tires on that one soon and have it mobile again.

Hi sprout,
Its me kirk,
I just got your emails and i saw that the bikes in the background,
I like KDX's and KX's too as i used to ride dirt bikes alot when i was younger, I had a 74 YZ 125 with the strap tank It didntr handle too good but it was fast in a straight line,
then I had a Honda XR 200 85 model,
I didnt like that one too well as it was a four stroke and kinda boring,
Ive liked the KDX's and KX's for yrs and i wanted a 73,or 74 CZ 400, or a maico 400 or a husky 400 wr,or even a bultaco 250 pursang,
I like the Honda 750 nighthawk as you can just get on it and go and dont have too fool with valves or ignition,
and its got good power and nice looks,
thanks alot for getting abck to me so soon,
keep in touch ok,
Kirk,

It wouldn't be the longer stroke because the F-20 is a 5" stroke and the M/6 had a 5-1/4" stroke.
They are two totally different engines with different cylinder heads/ports and different styles of manifolds.

F-20s will sound different with a kerosene vs gasoline manifold too. If they still have the cast elbow, they will sound different than with a verticle straight pipe as well.

The F-20 and the Regular have the same basic engine but with different manifolds and they sound a lot different from each other.

If you retard the spark (or if the timing isn't right to begin with) on an F-20 it will really make them bark under a load.

Long stroke, valve timing(exhaust overlap) so no pop pop but poppop, head design, and manifold design. I have three with three different manifolds, two IHC and one after market and all three sound distinctive, but definitely F-20.

I know what you mean. I have a 1936 F-20, standard bore, head, pistons, with the iron exhaust elbow, and a 1942 M with over bore kit, pop-up pistons, 8060 head, and straight pipe. The F-20 is MUCH louder at idle then the M. Even under moderate loads, the M never gets too loud. Both are running magnetos. I don't know why the M, with twice the HP, is so much louder then the F-20.
