I am at a slighty similiar dilemma...

One tractor I bought came with a brand new 15.5 - 38 Galaxy Super Tracs

Other side had a junker on....no tread..just holds air...

I got a quote of $500+ for a new Galaxy....

( I checked online and they dont list a 15.5-38 any more for the same tire)

But at $350 per tire on a different brand...

So I thought of buying two of the cheaper ones...then taking the Galaxy down to the auction to recover a few dollars...

I plan on plowing/discing with this tractor.....

Also will a 16.9 fit on that rim??

What do you guys think??

Dave

If it is a user tractor, holding air, and tractionare allthat matters. If the tires slip under load more than 10 to 12% Count rotations, check circumference, and distance traveled pulling tillage equip. and compare to find slip %. If weight, and draft control (not on an H) are good, and slippage is more than 12%, I would consider replacement. If it is a light duty wagon hauler, run them till air shows. If it is a show tractor they look best with fairly new tires. JimN

There are differences in original depth, but I feel an inch and a quarter is about all there is on a new tire, so 3/4 of an inch measured at about half a tread bar from center would be OK
The traction would be useless when at less than 7/16 or so. Wear is usually uneven from center to sidewall. The wear is also dependant on how much road travel at what inflation. If you are looking for average soil pulling power, more than 1/2 worn tires will slip more. if light pulls in fairly compacted soil, there won't be much of an issue. Carcas cracks and checks are more important. JimN
