I'm sick. This thing I bought to enjoy has become a nightmare. Today while driving it around I found that #4 gear(only) is making a clanging noise while pulling up an incline or straight way. Push the clutch in and it stops. I sounds like a bull dozer track moving in reverse at a fair rate of speed. I'm sure most of you have heard them on dry ground in reverse. That's as near as I can describe the sound. Mechanic said he did not know but sounded like maybe a tooth missing on gear #4. Would have to tear down to see. Wow The guy who sold me this had to know but he sold it as is. So there. Today is the first time I heard the sound. I thought the sound was only heard when TA was in DD. But No, it is in both DD and TA range. Anyone have a clue? Is that all it could be. Where could a person get a good used 4th Gear? Sick in Tennessee

Jerry

Bummer.

I think this is one that you can remove the shifter and top cover off the top of the tranny and inspect the gears. In fact you can see some of the gears by removing the large bullplug where you fill the hytran. Maybe stick a swivel mirror in there and use a flashlight. I believe the 4th gear is a larger one towards the rear. I can't tell from the drawing but one shaft has a sliding gear that works for both 4th & 5th. If you have 5th then it is not that gear.

If you have any metal chips laying around in the bottom of the tranny, you may want to change your fluid to keep any metal pieces out of the hydraulics. To properly check the tranny, you probably have to drain it anyway. Then run a magnet around the bottom to get any loose metal.

I'll let someone who has had one of these apart tell you more.

Now that would not be a first for me. As the High School principle and i did not get along . Never understood why. ???? maybe because i was the master mind that came up with the ider of putting his VW bug up on the parking lot guard rails ? nah that could not be it . Maybe the day that they drug me out of metal shop to go weld the railing on the one stairwell that got broken from a little disagreement between a couple other guys and when finished with that as my buddy and i were taking things back to the shop i could not resist putting that three inch vertical weld on his fireproof door and welding him in , nah maybe it was the scateboard deal as i was flyen down the long hall way when the English teacher opened the door up inft. of me i hit the door and drover her clean across the class room , nah ,Maybe it was from doing burnouts behind the metal shop in the car clubs 55 cheve after installing the traction bars As i only did it three times and one of the other guys tryed it and he got caught not me and i did not get the three wacks and three weeks after school . You would have to ask the wife for full details of my highschool days as when we were first married she did two years of subben at some of the area highschools and got to sub at my old H/S for 5 months and got the whole story from the old assit. principle who had moved up the food chain . I indeed left my mark that would soon not be forgotten.

Getting parts should be easy. Least expensive route will be a used set of gears from a tractor salvage yard. There are plenty of 656s that have gone on to that big barn in the sky, if you know what I mean, so there should be plenty of parts available just about everywhere.

Notice I said gearS. You will want to replace both the drive, and driven, gear in a matched set.
I think these are the two parts you need to replace if indeed the problem is with a chipped/broken gear. These are from the online parts catalog at CaseIH.com by the way:

388167R1 - GEAR, fourth and fifth speed sliding, 37 teeth
388151R1 - GEAR, fourth speed driving, 44 teeth
According to the catalog, they're still available new. I'd still hit the salvage yards to see if any used ones are around. Even shipped across country from one of the bigger places like Steel Wheel Ranch, it'll be lots cheaper than new from CaseIH.

You might be able to find a semi-retired tractor mechanic in your area with his own shop that'll put them in for you at a reasonable price, too.

Could you run her without doing any more damage?
I don't think I could sell it, because i won't lie to anyone about what's wrong.

Thanks

Jerry

Yes if ya don't run 4th gear. IF ya have a place to work and tools and a IT manual a set of home made spliting stands a set of jack stands and a cherry picker . And some time a new or used gear some gskt. i think that your could fix it yourself for under 500 bucks . ut if you can't then to pay some one to do this depending on there labor rate and how bad they nick ya on the hours . I call that job at about 22-23 hours to go thru it and check everything while your in there .

Thanks to All--Found a mechanic with an independent shop. Works by himself but has been doing this for years. Said he would do it for me. Going to open it up from top. Waiting to see what I need before looking up one. He said we need to put all seals, etc while in there. Seals for IPTO, TA, Hyd. or anything we find. I'm installing my clutch and throw out at the same time. He said he would double split and check it all while doing it. So maybe while I'm sick I might have found some salvation.

Thanks again to all and let me know if you can think if something else. Trying to get out of bed after being up all night throwing up over this.

Jerry
